Morning..
Yesterday my 19j was running a treat it has done for the last few weeks, couldn't fault it.
However yesterday it was ticking over whilst I was fannying about with mud flaps, when it faltered and stopped.:(
Prior to this 'falter' when I started it 10mins before, it took a few turns before it fired and I remember think it didn't sound right.
I tried to turn it over, nothing.
My first thought was, stop solenoid, ignition on, took off spade clip and touched contact, it clicked.
Feed pipe from tank come loose? I have a little 'bodge there' no not that.
sucked in some air? opened the 8mm bleed screw on pump, pumped the lift pump, which was well hard, no air or fuel came out?? just nothing.
Is my lift pump fekked?
Read other symptoms of lift pump going and it seem I may get some prior warning.
As I say before this the 19j was running superb! sounded lovely, was doing everything it should, it was perfect. That's why I am a bit baffled.:(

Hi mate - just got your msg. Sounds as if it could be a fuel issue, however there are a million and one other reasons why as well, but let's start with the fuel. The easiest (but slightly messy way of testing it is to slaken off one of the nuts holding the injector pipe to the injector and turn it over. Fuel should come spraying out. If it does then check th others as well. If all four are spraying fuel out then your fuel system should be fine (unless all four injectors have blocked at the same time!)

I presume when it stopped there was no loud bang or sounds of distruction of metal etc?

Cheers JC
Yeah no bangs or nastiness.
When it stopped, it sorta, tiny bit of a falter then stop...

I think fuel to I can assume there will be no fuel at injectors as there was no fuel at pump bleed screw:(

I am limited to weekends for working on 90 so will have to wait till Saturday now:mad:
Was so annoyed with it yesterday that I swore at it and locked it up and left very angry..
90 is mocking me as I have so nearly put it back on the road...
Like I say side lights, main beam and Mot then I can tax it:eek:

Will keep ya posted as to what I discover this Saturday, might even av a go after work.
Appreciate your help will give that a go first and work backwards to the tank....
Cheers J :D

If no fuel isncomming out of the bleed screw when you pump the prime handle on the lift pump then either your lift pump has gone, your fuel line/filter is blocked or you have no diesel in the tank.

Easiest thin to do it to remove inlet pipe from the injector pump (from lift pump - not the return pipe) and pump the prime handle if nothing comes out then you need to make sure the pipes are not blocked, and then swap the lift pump.

Don't give up it the 19j is a lovely engine and with a bit of care will go for ever (as long as you own an oil company)

Yeah it likes a drink of oil:D
I will try that, gotta feeling its the lift pump.
filter new, half a tank of derv.
So it can only be pipe blockage or lift pump.
Think I may order one of them..
I not gunna give up on it yet, but soon I will convert to 200tdi, when I get the time:D:D

Make sure the new filter is not wet as well as if you have a load of water at te bottom of the tqkn and it has now pulled water through he filter the water will block the filter paper and prevent the oil going through as quickly/at all

That I will also investigate, could well be my problem.
Aah tempted to drive to it now and check the tank and filter.
I thought the tank was completely dry before I filled it up.
I had to do up the drain plug before I put derv into it.
Hmmm, maybe the buts I used had some water in.
I still think lift pump as I am sure tank was good.
Its a fairly new tank, the one I removed was a shocker:eek:
Will make that one of my first checks.

Well today I got me TD fired up and running sweet again.
I changed the lift pump and fitted one of them inline fuel priming bulbs.
I fitted the priming bulb because using the lift pump was a complete arse and I spent more time trying to get the cam in the right place to bleed up that actually the bleed itself.
So I fitted the bulb after the lift pump going into the filter.
Now all I do is give the bulb a few squeezes open the 8mm injector pump bleed screw and It bleeds up well quickly.
Crank over the engine till she fires and **vroom**:D:D:D
Rather than fekking about with that crappy, awkward lift pump.
Recommend the fitting of the bulb
6 mm Fuel Primer Bulb Pump Petrol Diesel alloy ends on eBay (end time 12-Jul-10 20:32:23 BST)
One like that.
Hope this helps someone:D:D
Thanks james and BoB for your added ideas:D
