I let it tick over for about 20 minutes and it started to smoke again,

That isnt usually considered good practice on an old diesel, and may cause problems. Let it tick over for a minute or so, to warm up the combustion chambers, then drive off.

I was actually considering dropping a 200tdi or 300tdi in there but.had second thoughts, generally the engine seems to be in quite good condition for its age and only 88k on the clock, not many original 90s left so going to try and keep it standard as possible.

If it aint broke, and you dont need speed, why fix it?
88 k is low mileage if it is well looked after. :)

It looks like I have lots to learn, and yes I agree if it ain't broke don't fix it. on that note I still need to know a definite yes or no about this shim washer. Is it supposed to have one or not, ahhhh

If it is there on the standard pump, it needs to be there. There will be a reason, although no-one seems certain what it is. Try and find a fuel injection specialist, they will have established contacts for parts, and may have often done the job themselves. Another route to go, try and find an old knackered pump, possibly from a breaker, or off ebay, and cannibalise off that.

Totally agree if it had one it was there for a reason, problem is this diaphragm looks like it's been changed before as it does not have the original lock wires through the bolts, so I don't know if it had one originally, I think my best bet up till now is wait for a reply from Delphi or go see a specialist,as suggested.
