Enough to think I'd bought a lemon and without a Nancom it was time for the Sherlock Holmes hat and follow simple clues like... water in the airbox bottom and a very damp air filter...
First stop was the maf sensor although it looked ok but obviously there was no telling just looking at it if it had been affected by so change it out with a good spare I kept from previous ownership, same with the aap sensor as the airbox top was damaged. Removed the map sensor which was gunked up so a good clean up required. Full service including fuel filter, diff and gearbox oils etc... first drive this morning and it's as glorious as a td5 I've driven. Poor running, spluttering and kangaroo throttle were gone and it started first turn instead of spluttering into life so it's not a lemon it just needed basic attention (thankfully).
I've read lots of related posts on the forum and checked for oil in the ecu as well as numerous other suggestions so thanks to the members I was lucky this time although tomorrow is unknown in landrover discovery 2 world 😄 👍

PS: obviously I spent to much time checking the chassis, suspension etc when I bought it and believe it or not it drove well on the way home lol..

Why was the air filter wet, someone been drowning it in a flood?
Good you made an improvement to it.
With the weather over the last 8 months who knows but there was no indication of such, hidden sludge etc the airbox was clean as a whistle but the bottom duck bill was missing which should be at the bottom and through the inner front wheel arch, I suspect thats how it got in..
