noticed a slight noise when i turned the stering wheel checked the oil reservoir and it was empty, topped it up and its dripping badly from under the engine but i cant see where, its leeking half a litre of stering fluid overnight even when its not running.anyone any idear what i should be looking for and where.

car is still drivable but stering makes a noise and is a bit stiff.

any info would be great

thanks

Could be low pressure feed, l/h side of engine block, can rub through on sump where it transfers from flex to plastic and back, thus explaining the noises as air is getting in the system, follow the pipe from the res and you will see the part I mean at the bottom, if it has rubbed through rather than replace I packed the pipe internally and repaired with q-bond as it is only low pressure

thanks chris i will have a look tomarrow, cant see much from the top of the engine i will have to get under the old girl and have a look.

thanks for the info.

had the same prob before xmas, turns out to be the high pressure hose which run down the front and under the engine, cost me £450 for LR to replace it.

I had a similar problem a couple of months ago - turned out to be a crack in the pump. funnily enough it leaked more when stopped than when in use. If you are driving then dont let the system dry out as the rest of the systems on the belt may develop problems if the pump siezes (the fluid lubricates it).

had a look this morning, oil leeking from a split in the plastic pipe on the left hand side of the engine, dont know what this part is called or how easy it is to repair or replace, its a u shaped plastic pipe about six inches long and fits between the rubber pipe that feeds the pump and reservoir by the engine sump.

spot on chris
