Went to look at another Discovery II today, this time an auto TD5. Seemed fine other than lots of condensation around the sunroofs, but its been stored for a while, carpets seemed dry enough. Oh and the performance was flatter than it should be, I suspect injector wiring loom issues or innefective turbo. Anyway, assuming that I can replace the sunroof seals and sort out the power loss I'm pretty happy with the vehicle other than a disconcerting metallic rattling noise coming from the gearbox area, it only does it at 2100rpm, no noise below or above that engine speed, and does it both when driving and in neutral. Its more obvious on the drivers side. Could this be a heat shield, or is there anything else in this area thats prone to rattle? I'm concerned that it might be something within the centre diff or gearbox! I know that this description isnt going to help diagnose the problem, but any pointers would be welcome.

Cheers, Chris

I would check for loose internals in the exhaust mine was ringing like a bell as the cat was detached inside. get underneath and give it a good bang with your hand or rubber hamer and you will hear anything loose.

Hope you find it and it is cheap!
