Yes, tighten up between adjustments.

It shouldn't be that loose though. The adjustment required is TINY. The guy before should have marked it all up on all sides before starting so his marks might still be there. lf not then make your own so you can always go back to where it was.

Obviously the words SLIGHTLY and GENTLY mean different things to different people. Unless the seal is getting towards knackered it should be quite possible to adjust the pump centre section with the engine running. I did describe how to really fine tune it on another thread. But that can take an age to do. Cannot be done absolutely exactly other than by luck unless the pump is removed and put on a proper calibration machine.

Hi all thought I'd report back on what's happened with the p38, it's had a recon injection pump fitted and programmed to the car, but it's not changed anything, it's still hunting on idle and it won't start when the engine gets even the slightest bit hot, the garage has told me that after coding the pump to the car and being left over night it appears to be loosing it's code and has to be re coded again, this is not down to the battery being flat as it's a new battery and has been checked to make sure it's holding its charge, I'm thinking maybe it's a faulty ecu.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what it could be?, I've had just about enough of it and will kill it with fire soon

Ask them what they mean by re coding the pump. Because i don't have a bloody clue what they mean.

I can only think they mean it is losing synch between the BECM and the EDC module = engine mangement system that sits behind the battery, As Wammers says, it is nothing to do with the fuel pump, other than the EDC adjusts the electric part in the top of the pump. If that is messing up it is more than likely down to RF interference unless you have the third generation RF receiver under your rear parcel shelf. Won't affect running of the engine though.

You've now replaced the lift-pump, FIP and no. 4 injector. Hot-starting issues were usually the older cars. Not sure if it applies to the 1999 ones? There is a temperature sensor that might have gone. Did that look OK on the diagnostics?

I had hot start problems with my diesel and sent the pump for testing and repair to this lot
http://apdiesels.clickforward.com/about-us/ and they did it within a week and i have had no problems since and just completed 15000 miles since it was done

He said it had had a reconditioned pump above. Not sure what they meant about coding it to the car though.
