i have a 1999 2.5 dse but it has a couple of niggles first one is when cold, when the revs get to 2500 up to 3000rpm there is a loud rattling/vibrating but dont do it when its warm, and secondly if i am doing around 60mph when i climb slight hills there is a continuous jolting as if its running out of diesel and revs fluttter with the jolts about 200 rpm not strong jolts, could a fuel filter be needed dont know when it was last serviced so might be a while ago. its done 130k last service bill i have was 90k.

Could be filter restricted but could also be lift pump not working. Rattle maybe tappets when did you last change the engine oil? Could also be EGR valve.

egr valve been done has not had oil change done in a while, can it take 5w 40 oil or will oil that thin damage the engine.

I would prefer 10w 40 but it's up to you. If it has not been done for a long time i would change oil and filter then two weeks later do same again. Mineral oil will do it does not need to be anything expensive. Oil and filter in diesel needs to be changed twice as often as specified. If you do that it will give you a long engine life.

ok i have spoke to the last owner as the range rover used to be for sale on here he said it is overdue a oil change as its the hydrolic tappets making the noise. he suggested 5w 40. but i will probably go for 10w 40 to be safe. along with a full service

What you need is clean oil in the tappets. I would do the double change i recommened earlier. Maybe they will settle down.

You do an oil change every 3000 miles? Even if fully synthetic?

Fully synthetic oil is designed for extended service intervals 12,000 miles between changes. Why would you use it in a M51 it's not needed. If our changing your oil every 3,000 miles it's not needed. If you want to spend silly money on it that's up to you. It's not about how long the oil will lubricate, it's about the **** it picks up from a diesel engine and circulates around the engine whilst inside it.
