Hello all,

1996 P38 Diesel manual 157k

When cold it doesn’t start too easily and then runs very loud and rough like it’s skipping a beat or rattling. I thought it could be the crank damper but I’ve had the fan belt off and can’t feel any movement.

When the fan belt was off it ran even rougher. There is some small play in fan clutch / water pump.

When it starts smoother (usually after having been run for a while) it runs way better and seems to run okay.

It’s like it rhythmically skips a beat with belt off especially.

Any help would be wonderful.

Best put this thread in the Range Rover section.

Water pump is a usual fail about 140,000miles. Can get a decent one for £40 easy to change. If shaft goes it ejects through your rad and plastic impeller breaks up inside. ask me how I know ;) I replaced with metal impeller one

Viscous fan can be tested with rolled up newspaper. (Look in searchbar in RR section) it’s connected on pump shaft so probably the bearings are on it’s way out.

Engine/crank wise best guy you can hope for is Wammers. He can probably tell from the noise alone.

At your mileage FIP/chains will be due service, injectors will be tiring (no4 in particular). Could go for years and doesn’t sound too dissimilar to mine. If possible plug into a nanocom06 would be more definitive. You can check modulation or injector faults etc see how worn it is. Any work been done by yourself or service record/receipts?
 
Cold start is probably glow plugs or leaking bleed off pipes on the injectors letting air in which makes it hard to start, can you see air bubbles in the clear pipe from the fuel filter.

As above post over in the range rover section the right people will get to see it.

Videoed a start from cold this morning. One thing I noticed was that despite the outside temp being around -1c the glow plug light stayed on for only 4-5 seconds.

When you say FIP and chains. Do you mean a complete replacement? Or re-timing them to account for stretch.

So would you say the noise is it starting on less than 6cylinders and then it runs smoother after a while as the cylinders kick in?

I’m going to check injector bleed off pipes.
How exactly do you check glow plugs? Or is it just easier to replace. Worth doing the timer too?

You can remove them, apply power and check they heat up. But for the effort that takes you're best off replacing them with quality ones. Dont use cheapies because they wont last long. No timer on these, ecu controlled

Brilliant. I’ll get some new plugs and some hose and get that switched over. New water pump by the looks too
