1994 Disco tdi - bobbing??

Hello all,

I have recently picked up my sister Discovery 1994 tdi....good all round condition (been in the family for 10yrs)

It has a funny problem.....I can only describe it a bobbing.....when driving at slow speeds (less than 20/15mph) the car seems to rock or bob from slide to slide...when the speed increases to go away (but I think it is still doing it a bit)

Any idea's? Also, when travelling at about 50/60mph...if you hit a pot hole or drain cover the steering wheel vibrate's/judders....is this normal?

Oval tyres

yer has it been stood up for a decent period of time? the tryes are egged mate without a doubt, the shockies wouldnt effect that at such low speed.

Guys can you explain edged? (yes the car has been stood on and off for about 10/12 months) what is edging and what is the best way to check? would this also explain the judder in the steering when hitting 'hole's' at speed?

NO NO NO no no no.. yes EGGS. OVAL

As the things been stood for a long time, the part of the tyres thats been in contact wi the floor will have had all the weight on one part of the tyre.
You might not be able to see it, but every time that part comes into contact with the road,It'll feel like your drivin into a hole, wobbly, wobbly,wobbly
juddering at speed could be yer steering damper.

hum,,,makes good sense........I will look into it..I guess the only answer is to get new boots?

Will check the steering damper also.

Most likely problem is a flat spot on yer tyre where its been standing for so long. (makes the tyre look egg/oval shaped) On a good tyre it might go back into shape but older tyres can easily deteriorate and if driven too hard it might cause the tread to seperate from the canvas. Take into a tyre centre and you'll see if it's misshaped when they spin it up on a balancer.

Guess all these eggs and the radiation are getting me scrambled. Anyone got a new yoke

Yeh I WISH it wer mine pinched the piccie from a bloke called Fritz

yer bushes are soft matey mine was like that when i first got her...polybush it an have done wive it...

Let some air out of them until there fairly soft without causing damage, then drive it a few meters, then put lots of air in, say an extra 8-10PSI over recommended pressure, run them like that for a bit and see what happens, after a while if the tyres are decent, they should sort themselves. Then drop pressure to the recommended.

Don't know why the air has to be taken out in the first place, but it seems to work, I guess it lets the tyre overflex and sort of squash up.

If it is juddering, then check the steering damper, panhard rod and radius arm bushes, also check the pre-load setting on the swivel pin housing.

wobble at high speed when on bumps or holes could come down to shockies aswell mate sorry i didnt answer that bit last time, just check they aint leaking, if they aint see how she feels after the tyres are done cause that might solve the prob.

Thanks for the help....will do the tyre deflat thing and see how she goes....it is currently running Michelin all round except for one cheapie on the front driverside and I suspect that one is the source.

Non of the shockers are leaking, nor is the steering damper....but I do plan to price up some polybushes and maybe a new damper as I bet she is the orignal, but I will call a find out.
