Give me spanners not wires. Hi all, I am trying to sort out my son's 200 TDi alternator issue. The ignition light does not go out when the engine is running, it is a NEW alternator and produces the correct voltage out of the back of the unit but not at the battery. It is therefore not charging the battery.

He had been wading in the Defender recently, up to the middle of the doors.

It has the Euro block connector for the loom/alternator. Two big wires and a small brown/yellow one.

Help greatly appreciated as taking him to work in my 10 mpg Range Rover is getting me down.

The new alternator was fitted after the wading episode. So I am working on the basis it is working ok.
 
Done all that yesterday - in the snow. If I earth out the ignition light lead should the light go out? Can it be done with the engine running?

I'd double check that the wires are in the correct place on the alternator, some new alternators can have similar pin locations but swapped arouns, look at the markings instead of location.

check wires from alternator to bulkhead the large browns and the smaller one for the warning light, check the cables on the battery and the starter motor, also the wires into the back of the dash.
check the light isnt getting a feed from somewhere else.

drop test the battery with everything disconnected make sure the battery isnt fried..
check relays etc.

i know you checked the earth, but fit a jump lead between the block and neg on battery just to make sure..

I know the attachment isnt for your veh but it helped me all the same when rewiring mine..
