Having heard it is a pretty robust/strong engine I think I will keep the petrol. As I said, I like the idea of it being original and as it is in good condition it seems a shame to start altering it after all these years! I'll just have to get used to the fuel economy!

That is what I have heard. My hard top 90 is not LEZ compliant, it says Lght utility 4x4 on the log book. A mate has a 90 SW, same 2.5td as mine, and he does go into London no problem, it says Station Wagon on his logbook, I think.
Personally I think you are right to keep the petrol engine even if the diesel is lez compliant.

once I done a single choke webber conversion for a late series petrol engine "customer" at the time. he said it transformed his landy overnight ??
made it better for economy and better running, but,
ask others might be best.

2" SU is a good conversion , esp with fuel economy in mind .
It will say "Estate" in your V5 for LEZ compliance
