Hi landyzone,

yesterday I started to sand the body panels of 1982 Rangie to have them repainted as some were looking really bad. What I discovered after three wing panels was that mostly the original paint is pretty solid (I got carried away some and most likely ruined the original paint on the two front wings...). Today I went over a door with 3000 grid sand paper and the result is looking very, very promising.

Which brings me to my question. Did they have clear coat on Rangies back in 1982 (mine is Sahara Dust)? And will modern 2k paint of the matching colour code stick without clear coat? If so, I'll go for spot repairs on the location with corrosion and badly repaired scratches and leave as much original paint as possible. If not I will have to get my hands on some other paint.

So if someone needs enough 2k 1982 Sahara Dust for a complete car including clear coat there might be a cost effective solution.

Greetings and enjoy the rest of Sunday!

Base and clear has been in use for a very long time certainly long before 1982. Don't know about your particular car but used long before it was made.

RRC paint of that vintage was single stage, polished to a shine..

RRC colours tended to fade with time

Venetian red was famous for fading from a bright red to a Tomato soup/orange colour becuase of the lack of Clear coat. ;)
