18 and wanting a p38

hi all
just looking on the BAY last nite and spotted a couple of nice diesel p38's which looked a lot comfier and a lot more refined than the 200tdi 110 im rattling about in nah, so out of curiosity i checked with my insurers about how much it would be? it came out at 2300 quid which to you may sound stupendous but its only 300 quid more than what im paying for my 110, so now with this information ive come up with a plan to sell my 110 and my mk1 golf project to raise enough cash to buy a p38 for about 4 grand which seems to be an ample amount for a diesel rangie. am i mad in thinking this is a good plan or is it stark raving bonkers i dont no what to do!!!

please please let me no your thoughts

pospone your plan fo 12 months and get some no claims bonus and obviously you'll be older which wil al make the quotes come down a bit
 
I thought of something very similar for a while, i'v waited till i turn 21 (getting so close i cant wait!) though and the insurance drops to around £600 ish for me. thats over 3 years driving and 3 years No Claims.
The P38 looks very appealing but personally im swaying between those and a slightly newer disco, those should work out slightly cheaper to run and still hell of alot comfier than a 110!

which insurers do you use?

well im nineteen in march so ive got a fair bit to go before 21 the insurers you may not believe this but the cheapest one for me to insure the landy by is ibuyeco the ECO FRIENDLY !!!!!!!!!! car insurer.
 
Just an experience i know of.
building up ncb with a van, ie commercial rate and then going to a car based vehicle resulted in the insurer stating that you have to go back to 15%.

Perhaps not sumatt that hapens now but worth checking, if yer aint allready.
 
I just tried to get a quote off them and although they would insure its almost £1000 more than i'd found at places like tesco and direct line! Impressed that you found somewhere to insure you at 19, loads of places just turned me down out right! Thats why i'v waited. Best of luck.

I got my P38 when I was 19 and searched around lots and lots of insurers and found NFU Mutual were the cheapest in the end for me.

Running a P38 is an expensive task I hate to admit but you already own a LR so you must be used to things going wrong :D

I would try and keep another car available though for those times when the P38 is in the garage (this WILL happen unless you have enough kit to do the work yourself) so that you have another car to drive about in. Im almost 22 now and its only just recently that ive been able to start using the courtesy cars at my specialists.

Do you know what model you want to go for?? £4k for a diesel sounds a little on the cheap side, was it a DT, DSE, DHSE??

You need to be wary of cracked cylinder heads (amongst other things) on the diesel engine when you test drive one take it on a long trip that includes motorways and windy country roads so the engine has to work hard. Once you have been on that trip, stop and let it idle and watch the temp needle, anything past 12o'clock will represent problems. Also get out and squeeze the two top rad hoses, if they are solid then there are head problems, they should be easy to squeeze when warm. Air suspension is another thing, check condition of all the bags, check it goes up and down properly. Take someone who knows P38's with you if you can so you can make sure you dont miss anything. Play with everything electrical to make sure it works. If it has air con make sure it works and keep an eye out on the display for any handbook icon that shows up, this could indicate problems that will cost lots.

Im sure some of the V8 guys will come along and say get one of those but im sure you've already found out saying the words 4 liter or 4.6 liter to an insurance company usually results in them hanging up :D

its nice to hear of younger guys after the p38, i'm 25 now but got my 1st 4.6 p38 at 22, loved it to bits! i drive a 2.5 now which i also love to bits! as others have said you own a Lr now so you're used to those little problems every couple of months! I'd go for it!

i notice your in Sheffield, I'm at Wakefield (jct41 M1) let me know when you get it, we can compare!

i just posted to levy about owner age of p38 and hadn't realised you were a younger owner too! i just presumed you were more mature!:D

this is great i thought i was the only one wanting a p38 at a fresh age. I'm 20 and wanted one for ages but settled for a Jag Sovereign at 18 and BMW E30 325 touring at 20 but now with 3 months until i'm 21 i though id get a quote.

Turns out that with no ncb its only(!) £1200 fully comp for a year, on a 4.6.

Having the Jag and E30 i'm used to bits going wrong but what are the best things to check for when looking?

Also which engine is generally most reliable?

Yo only live once...Bollocks to what everyone else thinks go and buy one...just buy sensibly, i bought my 1997 4.6 HSE in Epsom metallic green with Cream leather interior and green piping last March for just £5800.Its had only done 71k miles and has an extensive FLSH file with lovely main dealer stamps in it all the way to date. its first 12 stamps shows that it had averaged 2500 miles between services. One owner from new and is in Fab condition. The interior is as it came out of the factory. It belonged to Lord Weinstock of Bowden and was an estate vehicle for his stud in Newmarket which is where I bought it from when it was advertised. Never towed. Bargain. I looked at similar dealer P38's and some wanted nearly double what I paid for mine. Be choosy when buying one I must have looked at 20+ before buying this one and I had £15k to spend. Theres loads of good ones out there. I wanted certain things when looking and stuck to it, and wanted one that was completely standard and not messed about with. These where my guidelines...Dark Colour, Dk Blue or Green, Cream Leather only, tan carpets, Wood, Autobox, LFSH, 5 spoke alloys not the 1st set with 3 spoke dont like them. This one was too nice to pass by and I saved myself a load of cash too. I test drove it twice and did a great deal with the seller for cash. So far water pump, coil pack and exhaust fitted totalling£600 ish and Ive added a Range Rover Soft full bull bar which I shopped around for and bought it via a local 4x4 specialist fitted for £130. Just looking for some driving lamps now!...Obviously a full service last October added some recommended performance leads and plugs etc...all new filters etc. Just starting to look at tyres now not essential yet but its good to plan ahead.

your only young once. go for it now!!!!

Although i agree, 4K does sound a little cheep for a deisel. make sure you check EVERYTHING when you go, and i mean EVERYTHING. Every switch, dial and nob. The thing abot the P38 if you get a bad one your bank manager will feel the pinch.

If there is somthing your not sure about Dont be worried about going away and thinking about it. you can always ask questions on here after you have been for a look and call the guy back.
