I have a TD5 ES it currently has 18" alloys and it makes tyre purchase costly especially as i want to start greenlaning. Putting tyre cost aside I wondered which is really better the 18s or 16s for on road use in the week and off road use for fun at the weekends? all opinons welcome!

I have 18" alloys on my Disco 2 V8 and 16" alloys on my old RR Classic. As far as I'm concerned the 18" follow every rut in the road and becomes an extremely uncomfortable ride whereas the 16" ignore ruts and the car drives straight and true. Apparently other people who use 18" wheels have the same problem. I am replacing my 18" with 16" as soon as funds allow. I live in an area with very badly rutted roads from heavy trucks - on UK roads I never had problems with tramlining but I would suggest that for a mixture of on-road/offroad use the 16" would be better. Hope this helps

I have a set of 16" TD5 Disco Alloys for sale if interested, 5 spoke genuine LR in really good condition.

Your choice of tyres is also much greater in 16". The ride will be far more compliant on 16" tyres as the profile will be 70% instead of 55% giving a greater sidewall height.
