Ive had various V8 RRcs and I doubt any made it to double digit MPG. My 90 was V8 now its a 300tdi, the 110 Csw im in the middle of a chassis change was a V8...itll be a TD5. No point in having them if they guzzle so much fuel you cant use them. :)

Where do we find these “3.9/4.0 or 4.6 EFI unit”s? Thank you.
Assuming you are in the UK. eBay is often a good source of engines or a breakers.

It might even be worth buying an entire Disco 2 or p38 RR and breaking it for the engine and selling off the bits you don't need.

So could I put a newer 4.0 EFI in my 2000 disco 2 v8?
2000 should be a Disco 2, which would have a 4.0 RV8.

MPG improvements are hard on the V8, more about driving than anything else, but they will never be the most frugal due to the weight/size of the vehicle.

Power can be improved however, no matter what V8 you have. A 4.6 could be retro fitted or you could put a different cam (plus other mods) to the 4.0.

Stock they are quite detuned with circa 182bhp from a 4.0, the 4.0 litre should be good for 200-230hp in a Discovery with some mods.

Sounds like there are some heavy right feet around ;)

I've owned four RRC V8 autos (one 3.9 & three 3.5efi) all bog standard & always got decent consumption, for a 2tonne perm. 4x4 brick. My current '87 has returned 22+ on a 600 mile round trip to Wales from Essex & I wasn't driving Miss Daisy, cruising at 70 on the M4 for much of the journey. Local rural driving averages 17/18 mpg.

nb. these figures are full tank to full tank calculations, not guesswork from fuel gauge indications.

Agreed. Anyone claiming BS about never getting above single digit mpg figures is talking out of their arse or had a broken vehicle.

Got a lift, MT's and modded exhaust on my 4.6 p38. MPG has dropped from stock, but it is still 15-17mpg running about. And just shy of 20 on a run.
