I have just acquired a 1989 110 commercial. It is all original including its 19J diesel engine.
I have known the vehicle for 10 years, which, during this time it has provided sterling service for beater transport on our shoot.
It has the usual issues,
Top bulkhead hinge panels rusted.
Footwells need replacing.
Chassis rusted.
Engine smokes and sometimes runs on own engine oil.
Clunks and rattles everywhere.

I intend to rebuild it with a budget of around £6000.
New galv chassis, repair panels to the bulkhead, respray. Etc. I intend to do all of the work myself so labour cost is irrelevant.
I am wondering whether to rebuild it as original or to buy a donor Disco, 200 or 300tdi and use the engine and axles.
The finished vehicle will only be used for short journies...40 miles or so..and mild off roading.

I have heard that the 19J is not the best of engines but this one has managed 271000 miles!
Keep standard or modify....what do you think.

If you’re only going to do short journeys I’d keep it original. 19j ain’t amazing but will do fine for what you’ve described. There aren’t many original/Unmodified Land Rovers around. Keep it like that.
