110 Fuel Tank replacemnt Confusion!

Hi guys,

Recently my tank has started leaking so i've bought a brand new one. I have 110 300tdi from 1995.

All seemed well, until I lowered my old tank down and noticed a pipe (fuel return pipe) going into a the middle of the tank. My new tank doesn't appear to have a hole here =(

It seems identical other than this. Have I bought the wrong tank?

Both tanks do have another small inlet in the top right corner. Could this be used on my new tank to attach the return pipe to?

OLD TANK. THE FUEL RETURN PIPE GOES STRAIGHT INTO THE TOP OF THE TANK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CIRCLE. MY NEW TANK DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE ANY FITTINGS TO REFIT LIKE THIS:



Any advice would be amazing. I'm very new to all this. This is the first bit of work i've attempted to do myself!

Your VIN will fall after the range specified for that tank, I think you need this one:

Your right that does look like the right one. Definitely has the correct hole on top for the return pipe. Thanks a lot.

Any idea if the one I bought could still work? Providing the bolt fittings are in the same spot. What is the pipe for up in the top left corner?

I could buy another tank, the one you’ve suggested. But I’ve already opened up the last tank now. Thrown the box away stupidly.

I suspect that the tank you have could work if you extended the return pipe. You have bought the earlier tank and as you have discovered the later tanks have the return pipe discharging through the top.
If you look through the hole where the sender unit fits, you will see that there is a box on the base of the tank where the fuel pick-up takes fuel from.
I suspect that this is designed to prevent fuel starvation when the fuel level is low and the vehicle is negotiating a steep hill. On the later tank the return discharges into this box which may improve matters, whereas the earlier type that you have bought may not.
The early tanks clearly worked on the vehicles they were fitted to, so you may experience no difference in performance in normal use.

I did the same thing! Now got the right tank but for the life of me can I find any guidance on how to fit the rerun pipe or send unit to the tank.

Anyone able to give some guidance?

Return looks like it has bolts holding it in and have a washer and metal ring for the sender unit on the side. Figure it will all go together and I can look at the old tank when I take it out but I’d rather know what I’m doing before starting the job.
