After giving up with P38 Range Rovers, I have gone back to a Defender. I just bought and had the deal of the centry! I have 2000 110 Defender with next to nothing wrong with it for £2000. To be honest, I dont think the guy knew what he had. To him it was a 12 year old landrover. Anyway, she has done 160k with the TD5 engine, she starts with a flick of the key from cold and has no smoke at all, even when I rev her. What I am asking is please, after I have changed all the oils, etc, what do I need to watch out for? I know the 300TDi well, but have never owned a TD5. I am hoping the TD5 is as bullet proof as the TDi. Thanks for any advise in advance..Ian..

Hi
Had my td5 90 8 years no great issues apart from a turbo bit expensive,be carefull when you change the dome/spinner oil filter the thread in the base strips out very easy, and easy to remedy 2 longer bolts drop straight through and nylocks wound on.
Use quality oils watch your coolant lavels, check your ecu plug (red) for oil contamination if there is obvious oil contamination change the loom & clean the ecu or it could cause you problems in the future buy 1 a replacement from a dealer it has some kind of seal on it to prevent this happening again.
Apart from this good engine.

Nice one, thanks guys. The only nasty if you call it that I have found is an oil leak on the right side of the engine. Im not to bothered, its not too bad, and as my dad says. If a landrover doesnt leak oil, there is no oil in it. I like to think of it as a self anti corrosion device. Thanks again, and I will look out for the problems you said... Ian....

Unless you know for sure that its been done - I would suggest drop the sump off and check that the oil pump bolt is tight.

And realise that while a td5 engine is a very solid engine it will not tolerate overheating - so suggest a temperature alarm

A word of caution on your oil leak down the right hand side, I had the same prob with mine the breather pipe was gunged up with slimy crap blocking up the breathing.
This seemed to be forcing oil misting out by way of the pipes hanging of the starter motor soi cleaned the breather steamed the engine off and fingers crossed problem solved that was 8 months ago.
Also the fuel pressure regulator down that side are prone too leaking & mixing with any surplus oil making it look a lot worse, but you will get a whiff of deisel if that is leaking

My 110 has 180000 on the clock, no leaks, my old mans 90 has 180000 too and he has had the oil in the loom causing issues and the fuel regulator
