Hi All,

I have had a problem over the last few days with the 110 (1987 2.5 n/a) not wanting to start - got a clicking noise from the engine when the key turned but no crank. After a couple of turns of the key she would fire right up, but yesterday the problem finally became permanent. Seemed like it was the starter motor or solenoid. Anyway, I tried to test the solenoid whilst it was still on the car but accidentally managed to scrape something on the solenoid - cue lots of sparks and now not even a clicking noise....

Took off the starter motor and solenoid and bench tested - motor fine but solenoid knackered. Got a new one, fitted it, bench tested it - everything OK. Refitted onto engine, but no click or start. The wire that comes from the ignition to the solenoid is showing no power....

So I must have blown something when I tried to test it - the original clicking I think was the solenoid failing to engage properly, and obviously afterwards no clicking as there is no power from the ignition.

Tomorrow I am going to try to trace the wire back and test along the way - just wondered if there are any relays which might be blown by this, or possibly the ignition switch? (Also the wipers are not working, although the fuse is OK).

Thanks!!

No relay as standard.
Ign switch is fiddly to get at but cheap to replace, held on to the end of the key switch with 2 little screws. Make a note where the wires go, switch has numbers on it to aid.
Column shroud off and knock round the shear nuts to remove the switch assembly complete is the quickest way .
