How are you at maintaining it yourself? If you want to, and want good reliability which you should be able to maintain fairly easily yourself (the engine) then go for the 300, the td5 will have to go into a garage for engine stuff. All the other bits are user-do-able, the td5 has lots of electrickery which doesn't like water being thrown at it - personally i'd go for the 300 for robustness but depends what you want it for!

TD5 all the way!!! had mine 18 months, bought it with no service history or nothing only problem ive had was a bad earth connection. But bound to be people here who don`t like them!! lol:D

Td5 has a few more electrics but buy a nanocom for £200 and it does all the stuff the garage can do (reprogramming etc.)
Just as easy to fix a Td5 as a 300tdi.
Took my 110 Td5 csw to Morocco with no worries.

servicing is straight forward on td5!! dont need a garage for that! justlike normal car. you can get a nanocom to plug into the ecu to read faults and do it urself.

If you are travelling in Africa, they will be able to maintain a 300 much easier than a td5. If the td5 goes tits up it will need compurickery and stuff to get it going again which they ain't got there, you can fix the 300 with blu tack, silver foil and gaffer tape and it's still relatively basic engineering which they should cope with OK in the backstreet garages of the sahara!
