110 300tdi heater controls

help needed or advice.
my 300tdi 110 heater controls on the side of the dash only work intermitantly, (mainly when its hot and not atall when its cold).
i dont wanna splash out on a new control switch thing so am wondering if i take off the 1 conector wire at the top and the 2 wires at the bottom that operate the fan and connect all 3 wires to a normal switch with 3 positions would this work,
so in theroy the middle setting on the switch would be off, top setting would be a mild blow and the bottom switch setting would be a full on in ur face blowing warmth.. (as good as a 110 can be anyway)

has any1 done this or am i just gunna have to rip the dash apart and replace the whole lot???
