109 station wagon

Hi there I have wanted a land rover for ages and never had the money to own one . I have come across a 109 station wagon (old s reg) at a farm I used to work at its been there for a few years and I have been told it failed mot on chassis. What rough price would it be worth if its just chassis that needs work. Also this might seem a stupid question but could anyone tell me what a sailsbury axle is and if free wheeling hubs are worth having thanks Neil

unless it's in really good condition (unlikely) then £150 to £200 Salisbury Axles are HD and considerably stronger than the rover axles that were also fitted. Free wheeling hubs are definately worth having as they save a fortune in fuel costs. when on road.

Hi thanks for that . There is another landy up at this farm a defender 110 looks like a van with windows if you know what i mean with a v8 in in
there again been stood but does not look to bad what woul this be worth its been standing but dont think it failed an mot i know its a bit vauge but what do u think

you sure its a defender not a stage one v8 they had a similar front end and they were in produced later but were still series free wheeling hubs are definitly worth sumthin in 2day specialy if it a 2.25 petrol as they do drink petrol so anything that saves it is good and worth money

If it's a stage 1 v8 then I don't think freewheeling hubs could or would fit as they had the same drive train as the rangie. Easiest way to tell is by looking for the diff lock. Stage one's were air operated using a button on the seat box. Think thats right, but it's been a long time since I had one.

Your 109 SIII is almost certain to have a Salisbury rear axle - I think all but the very earliest SIIIs had them as standard. You can identify a Salisbury by its bolted on diff pan at the back of the axle, Rover axle pans are welded on.

Free wheeling hubs seemed to make a noticeable improvement in fuel consumption when I fitted them to my 2 1/4 petrol SIIA. I'm a big fan of electric cooling fans to help fuel consumption too because they have other benefits like making the interior heater work better and they stop water getting sprayed all over the electrics when wading.
