109 in need of some help/advice - won’t start

Hi everyone. I was very lucky to acquire a friends 109 from them in November last year as they went back to S.A to live. It’s been tucked up in the garage since then but now I have some time on my hands due to everything that’s going on I’d like to get her moving again. Hands up I don’t know much about old defenders So starting from scratch. Went to start her but no joy, ticks over but doesn’t start. So far I’ve changed the battery as old one was flat. Has 1/4 tank of fuel from when put away (should I fill up with new petrol mix) Used the hand crank (that was fun) but so far no joy. Any tips or tricks Appreciated. Very basic I know. Thanks in advance.

if you are still here, I think you mean "turns over but doesn't start" as if it ticks over, it is running!
Yes, old petrol is likely to be a bit of a prob although if it ran last November it really may just need an extra gallon or two chucking in (oops, showing my age there!)
But you might need to put some carb cleaner through it, I assume you have checked you are getting sparks at the plugs?
You could just buy a can of Eazistart and give it a good spray then give it a whizz. but do make sure the batt is fully charged.

Thank you for the tips and tried adding new fuel today but no joy. I’ll pick up some eazistart tomorrow and see what happens (fingers crossed). This is going to sound really dumb but on the fuel tank under the front seat, which position should the tap handle be at to open the flow? All the best.

My dumb answer is that I don't know as I only have Discovery 1s and a Disco 2 but I would assume that if the tap can move to a position where it is in line with the fuel line that is most likely to be correct. If in doubt you could disconnect it and blow through it or look through it. But with most "cocks" in line is usually the open position.
But if you are unsure of fuel pump or anything else, you could rig up a gravity tank and hang it up on the bonnet, or alternatively use a boat tank, as if for an outboard. All these have been used in the past and I keep a gravity tank specially for these occasions!
I take it you have had a look in the float chamber on the carb? Also, if you have been cranking for a while and have had no luck, if the exhaust smells of petrol it tends to indicate that fuel is getting to the carb.
Needle valve could be gummed up with old fuel and not letting any fuel into float chamber.
You haven't mentioned it but does that mean you do have sparks at the plugs?
 
Sounds like you have twin tanks do you fill by removing the sear base I have not had this set up myself but logic would be lever towards the tank you want to use good luck.
