1.8 Engine Cam Cover

Should there be a cover/plate attached to the engine block where the end of the camshaft is on the 1.8 :confused: (right hand side facing from front of car)

Have some slight oil leaking but notice that there are 2 threaded bolt holes where it looks as if a cover/plate should be....done a search but some say yes/some say no never...:confused:

If there is/should be a cover does any wise gurus have a pic they could put up....a cover with a gasket would be ideal ;)
 
There should be cover, it's not oil tight, it's only there to stop fingers and other objects touching the end of the camshaft. If it's leaking oil, a new seal will be required.
 
About a fiver for a new seal....done ones b4 on other cars, is it the same principle for the a Freelander ie prize the old one out with a thin screwdriver then gently tap the new one in without having to take/dismantle anything :confused:

Thanks for the pic but its on the end of the cam shaft on the engine block, right hand side as you face the engine near the Air Filter Box, seal is a round one approx 1/2 inches.....just looks as if there should be a plate,cover also esp as there are bolt holes :confused::confused:

There should be a plate, see post 2 ;)
 
Mine has the plates. One covering each cam end. When I took them off to get the cams out they didn't have any gaskets. Just instant gasket stuff.
 
i've seen a k series without the cover on and that one wasn't leaking.

yours will, however, need a camshaft oil seal fitting without a doubt.

an easy job if you don't scratch the bore taking it out. Use a socket to drift the new one in place.
