Hi please could anyone offer some advise on how to remove the hub from the backing plate on the rear.

I'm having to replace the brake pistons which have croided very badly on to the backing plate. I'm concerned when trying to remove the pistons the plate will snap of aswell.

I am unable to work out how the brake hub comes off if it needs a pully or I'm missing somthing thank you in advance.

The back plate is way tougher than anything you're going to be able to throw at your pistons, it's held on with 4 bolts onto the back of the hub body, which are nearly impossible to get onto with the hub on the vehicle. Even if you got the bolts off, the back plate typically rusts solid onto the bub so removing the bolts still elaves it stuck tight, finally , the backplate comes off from the back of the hub over the lug that goes into the suspension strut. So to get the backplate off you'd need to have removed the two crash bolts(going through hub and strut) the bottom swivel bar that connects the two short suspsension links to the hub, the long link bar, the drive shaft nut, the the ABS sensor, the clips for the brake pipe & hose, then the four bolts from the backplate into the back of the hub, then press / mash it off - fuggedabout it..

To get the pistons off, there are two little m6 bolts that have 8mm heads that rust up to buggery, a brake pipe fitting, and a bleed nipple. Remove the brake pipe fitting with spanners and gentle heat, hoping the nut doesn't stick to the pipe causing it to twist up and wreck the pipe, and obliterate the bolts and nipple with a grinder / dremel / die grinder. An alternative approach is to destroy the old piston with a grinder from thefront side.

I think the op is asking how to get the drum off?? Or maybe they have done that?
If the drum, the outer brake casing, is the issue then 2 large cross head screws and work around the edge levering against the back plate.

Then what Jayridium says. Brake cylinders rarely come off but if you can get a good purchase on the two small bolts holding the piston on, then they will snap and make life easier.

Thank you very much for the quick reply, we did indeed already remove the hub it was the back plate we was after. I was hoping it would be an easier job, but in the end we used a grinder to get the piston off , thankfully no damage to the plate which was our concern. The bleed nipple and 1/4 of the piston had disintegrated , we have changed all the break pipes and hoses. One side done one to go

Good news. Well done, the corrosion can be bad and the aluminium against steel makes it worse!! Glad you didn't damage the backplate.
