Afternoon chaps,

Been trying to diagnose a few noises recently, the main noise was the rear diff which i have now solved but got another noise which sounds like the TX box, found a video on Youtube which has a very similar noise.

It is quite faint but you can hear it, sounds like a whine possibly a faulty bearing. On mine it is quite audible at 38 - 42mph in 5th, precise i know but thats where it is loudest

Oil has been changed recently for EP80w/90, no swarf or chunks in the oil or drain plug. Old oil looked alright but not 100% when it was last changed.

Bit of background if it helps. Went off roading a few weeks ago, went up a steep rutted hill which destroyed the trailing arm bushes and caused the axle to move forward about 2 inches, this shagged the diff but clearly has caused other damage.

Thanks :)

i cant hear the vid on my computer at the moment, but first port of call would be to check and replace rear output bearing stc1130, drain oil and check that then remove sump plate you can check for float in the 3 gear sets

Thats what I was thinking. Does the oil have to be drained to change the bearing?

How does one check the float? If its anything like the diff bearings im out of my depth! lol

oil doesnt have to be drained to change bearing, but a little will come out, condition of oil can be diagnostic, yoou feel/ lever gears for any end float

Ok cheers James, ill order a bearing and seal tomorrow, get on it soon as I can.

Ordered - £13.44 much better than a bigger bill for a new TX box.

Right so i pulled the prop off and the big retaining nut. I cant feel any play at all in the shaft! Its rock solid, infact trying to move it moves the whole transfer case.

Am I right in thinking that bearing is alright then?

With the Tbox in neutral and diff lock disengaged does the output shaft rotate smoothly? When you say 'moves the whole case" is that when rotating or pushing in/out, up/down?

Ahh tbh didnt think of trying to spin it :oops: Though I will now...

Just up and down, moved the case a tad but nothing massive. No play in and out either far as I could tell.

So dropped the prop today, TX in N, spins happily, no noise I could hear but only so fast i can spin it by hand.

The handbrake drum was a little noisey cleaned that up but no real difference.

@jamesmartin Could do with your insight here! :)

There is still a noise which sounds like its coming from the transmission, I can't quite tell if its front or back but it sounds more toward the rear.

As far as I can tell there is no play up, down, left or right in the rear output shaft, it also spins freely with the TX box in neutral

Got a 260 mile drive coming up (130 there, 130 back) over the weekend and wondering If I should take a day off and try and change this bearing, if it is in buggered.

problem is its not clear theres anything wrong with that bearing, id be looking inside the box too

Yeah that's what I thought... I don't want to be stripping parts and replacing bearings to no avail.

Been meaning to look in the box, though not had a chance yet. After dropping the plate anything I should be looking for in particular?

If I drop the props off the front & rear of the TX then "drive" think that would help in trying to find the source?

Cheers. I'm off tomorrow, ill do that and what I find. Tbh I am tired of dropping props

Anyone recommend a prop shaft nut removal tool that actually fits? I bought one the other day which stated 'For Land Rovers' its bigger than me standard 14mm socket..:rolleyes:

yes run on one prop at a time ,it might help narrow this down

Ok so dropped both props and driven around.

Front prop off - noise remains
Rear prop off - noise remains

TX Box - standard
No play rear output shaft
Spins freely
Splines look good too

No play front output shaft
Spins freely

Rear diff - Xcess 4x4/Ash ATB
No play

Front diff - std diff, recent oil change
No play up, down, in or out
Spins about 1/4 turn left / right

Main Gearbox
Oil was recently changed, dark in colour but looked alright. No swarf or anything much on the drain. Refilled with MTF94

No trouble changing gears, cold or otherwise.

No unusual vibrations i can feel

All prop UJs seem to be in good condition, recently greased

Any suggestions? Ill get the inspection plate off the TX box tomorrow

For some reason known only to the powers that be at Land Rover, the size of the nuts and bolts on the prop shafts is actually 9/16 AF, or it should be.
There are tools out there designed to make things a tad easier but they ain't cheap:
1/2 inch square drive:

3/8 inch square drive:
