Hi All,

My 03 td5 has an odd characteristic. On full throttle it can feel like the ignition is cutting in and out in big pulses? Much like turning the engine of and on. It does not do it all the time and seems to do it more after a layup of a week or more. If you keep letting it pulse and back of a few times it seems to lessen.

Allisport reckoned it was the MAF sensor - changed it and no different. Someone else said my turbo is over boosting and it will blow the bugger up! What route do I check out now>

Could it be a stiff turbo boost actuator rod assembly?

Thanks

It starts fine, runs well unless you really ask for all the beans.

If a hose was going/gone surely it would just get worse or reach a peak in lack of performance?

I reckon the modulator (whatever that is) or the arm is sticking at the loints.

Would this explain the loosening up the more you work it? i.e full beans then off, full beans then off. repeat until it improves?

It might have the wastegate actuator rod shortened too much, leading to an over boost. Screwing the adjuster just half a turn can make a big difference. Some people shorten them until they get overboost on full throttle then wind it back a tad.

If all the rest checks out try this. I shortened mine a while back a couple of turns and it really livened up the car.

Cheers

check the ecu plug for evidence of oil contamination where it plgs into the ecu

mine did what you are describing, and it was this on a 52 reg TD5, oil runs through main wiring harness, injector rail into ECU, ECU is saveable if left upside down in a bowl, injector harness not too expensive, main loom massive money, call Martin at Aylmer he has done loads of these on TD5's

This is just the sort of problems that a leaking TD5 injector copper washer can cause.

Eightinavee knows about these - ask his advice.

I know! Not shy for hard work and if away filming with work i love to get home quick (safely using IAM and other techniques), back to my wife and kids. Trouble is td5 can't hack it yet old stinky (300 tdi disco with many tweaks) loves it! I think the ts5 is too posh to push (through the air that is). Old stinky though is vibey and the sounds are not as good as the td5. Can't have it all!

ermmm .....

i was on about CharlesY commuting from Lanarkshire to Newport to open his new shop in the mornings

"(safely using IAM and other techniques)" - i guess that's a posh way of addmitting to speeding
