Hello all
car wouldn't start this morning, had breakdown guy out who couldn't get it going but has narrowed down, no fault codes on diag machine, turns over but not firing, no fuses gone, fuel going to injectors but no electrics from injectors - any ideas what might be causing before i get raped by land rover please?!?!

ok its been a cold morning, so check the glowplugs are working , that would be a good place to start,
then go for fuel isssues, ie fuel pumps , fuel pressuer sensor on common rail, see if its connected securley

"fuel going to injectors but no electrics from injectors" you need to have the fuel common rail up to pressure before the injectors willl attempt to fire

reet yer start wiff fuse f1+f2+f3 then check main relay as this controls a lot of i/p sensors to enable ecm ta fire ejectors and as john says if yer glow plugs are not working this also gives a signal, but if after checkin the easy bits the cam shaft sensor is a favorite suspect ,as there is bout 9-10 i/p sensors that have to give the correct signal on switch on its a minefield . . . . .so check the simple things first . . . .:)

Cheers for your comments guys, all fed back to mechanic dude who has done most of above, glow plugs working, now going to check for a leaky injector - how do you check sensors if no fault codes on the diag machine?

this it the failing of the td4, if it goes wrong , its a real pain to trace faults, and from what i can gather even with the test gear its not that easy,
might have to be a case of elimination, make sure the fuel pumps are working , then start changing the sensors, around £40 for the camshaft sensor, this one is only needed on start up, as has already been mentioned , its known to fail ,

camshaft , fuel pressure , crankshaft , map ,,maf sensor, just the ones i can think of,
take it to a dealer and you wont see much change from £500 i bet, replace the sensors yourself in a step by step fashion would be a lot cheaper ,unless its somthing else (ecu) fingers crossed, let us know what you find

fortunately it's not at the dealers, it's with a guy who i've grown to trust (naive maybe!) through looking after our cars over last few years. At £35 per hour he's not over the top, trained at VAG and also BMW so knows his stuff, nice guy and never charges full whack so fingers crossed!

It's home! He phoned me this morning, it had randomly started satirday morning so he had the injectors out, no leaks but carbon deposits on 1 meaning stuck open meaning pressure too low so refusing to fire. Cleaned and put back together and it's working, still doesn't sound perfect when starting but we'll see how it goes. Charged me a total of £61 which considering how long he'd had it and had it to bits twice!!!!!!!!! Didn't go down the route of sensors to start with as diag machine showed no faults and no fault codes stored which it should if one failed

Fingers crossed it stays well!

Are you sure its not the wiring loom to injectors, This has been reported a few times and injectors replaced when it was just the loom
I think they are about £35, do a search on injector wiring loom

defo injector, the pressures in the common rail are up and down which is where the problem is, one injector seeps so pressure drops and injectors refuse to fire as they all have to be same, after a good clean it started a few times but as leak builds up it stops working again.

Apparently we're talking well into 4 figures for new set of injectors but reckons £90+vat each to refurb them will do the trick and an hours labour to refit. Can't complain really as we've barely had any trouble with it in the past

struggling to understand this one ,,,
if injector was loosing the pressure that bad would it be filling the cylinder with fuel ?( it must be really fooked )
i would have thought fuel pump would charged common rail enough as the amount of fuel you can get through an injector wouldnt be that great even fully open under high pressure

if injector is filling cylinder with fuel be very carefull, hydraulic lock can damage engines. also check your oil for contamination

think the key is that even the tiniest of tiny leaks means unequal pressures across the injectors trips the sensor and won't fire them. I can't claim to understand all this fully but from what i can tell the fuel is leaking from the bit before it goes in

Is the bit before it goes in not the return line ??

All fixed, leaky injector, refurb'd at specialist diesel injector place and refitted, sort of happy now although shelling out a reasonable amount of wedge 3 days before chrimbo not funny

Glad yer got it sorted ssl . . . .yer lucky as they can be er reet pig ta get out , fink it twas clutchy who done er reet good info on how to remove injectors ,will work on most doozle systems. . . .keep usin injector cleaner on a regular basis like wot john sis, if you use it regular then this is good ,trouble comes if you use it fer first time un you'll rake all the ****e from yer plastic tank into yer fuel system ,un so a more regular filter change. . . . .or am i jist a silly space man talkin ****e. . . .dunt fink so:) :) :)
