right i think ive fcuked up the pump timing !

ive got the cam, crank and pump all pinned up , turned the engine by hand five times rechecked the timing and the pins fitted perfectly. does it start ?

does it fcuk. i redid all the belt timing rechecked everything same problem

i mangaged to get the engine started, it ran like it was on tickover even though the throttle was pressed fully down. after a few moments it reved up but full revs it didnt sound as though it was right.
let the revs off and it is running lumpy, rev it again and after a few seconds it revs up fully but still not right and theres a fair bit of blue smoke.

while messing about getting the IP pully to line up and pin it i used the large center nut in the middle of the injector pump sprocket to move the pump. the nut came loose and the whole belt pully moved slightly.

IP = injector pump

i reckon the IP timing has moved but i aint sure if it can do this ?
if you remove the three 10mm bolts that hold the IP belt pully to the IP shaft there is a boss that is bolted to the IP shaft by the large bolt. is this boss just bolted to the shaft or is there a woodruff key in the IP shaft that wont allow the boss to move ?

this is doin my head in. i have done loads of transit 2.5di engine timing belts and they are a piece of **** compaired to this b*stard thing !
you would have thought land rover would have a system as easy to work with as transit but oh no.
its a right c*ntin thing and its melting my head !

any help would be very much appreciated

hi, don't know if you've checked it but the woodruff key in the crank pulley is quite prone to wear on a 300, same symptoms as you've said as the timing is out and can change while running. My mate fried his head with his dads 300, running fine one minute, rough and smoking the next and he'd done the timing on it 3 times before finding knackered woodruff key in the crank to timing belt gear. Just a thought, hope it helps.

thanks for getting back.
i have replaced the woodruff key as it had worn quite badly and the crank pully had also worn very badly so i put new ones on,

im fairly sure its the pump timing thats out :(

Mark it up in the position its in, then play...

Not got a clue which way you'd need to go, but no doubt you already have an idea where its moved from/to!

Suck it and see

That would only happen if you are moving the sprocket anti-clockwise, which is a no-no to start with. If you miss the marks go round again.

It does sound to me as if you have moved the whole sprocket such that the timing pin hole is now no longer in the right place with respect to the actual pump internals.

Time to get a DTI and look up injector pump timing in the manual.

Maybe you should get a Defender with a puma engine.

With the 300tdi you fine adjust by moving the pulley (as you have found) unlike earlier engines where you moved the pump. But I would not have thought there is a enough play in the little notches to allow you to get it out that much. Also the pump shaft should be splined so I don't see you moving the pulley independantly of the shaft.

Are you sure it's not out by a tooth or something, on top of that the bad adjustment on the pulley so its more like 2?

thanks for all the suggestions ! i have had to retard the pump quit a bit to compensate for the advancment made by the last person who serviced the belt. had they have checked the crank pully they would have seen the problem but they must have just adjusted the pump to make up for the movment the timing belt must have made.

needless to say i have got the engine near bang on.
once again thanks for all the suggestions.
