hi can anyone help me ive got 2000 td4 es only owned it for a couple of mnths but i notice thatb when i go around a right hand bend i get a sort of knocking sound on nearside front any ideas what it could be & is it serious, the car was only mot"d in may.
by the way i am new to the forum so apoligies if this seems a bit pushy for my first topic....

rgrds john....

Possibly the drop links, they are attached to the antiroll bar and are a regular piece that need changing, not expensive and pretty easy to do but change both and possibly the antiroll bar bushes an all. ( they are a little bar with a ball joint at each end, have a look on ebay for a pic)
Hope this helps

thanxs for your advice i think i will get it checked out but your theory sounds quite logical will let u know how i get on!!!!!!!!!

kindv regards john.........

i have got a mechanic friend who has changed the drop link bars, he says that the anti roll bar bushes seam ok on visual inspection, after taking it on teset run still get the noise if going around right hand bend, the noise is coming from the nearside front, when on straight its fine but if you hit a pothole it then apears very hard on nearside, my friend says that hes had it on the ramp in garage & cant find anything untoward, but its hard to put the same kind of weight & stresses on when car is stationary on ramp, any other suggestions would be apreciated..

regards.

And I do too! - just bought my TD4 Commercial, worked on it all day servicing it, I can find no obvious faults.
Right hand bend power on and it makes this judder/knock from somewhere on the front.
Left hand bend is fine. At all other times runs like a good un.

Definately ball joint on lower arm i'd say. I had it on my right hand side, and it only happened while turning. I replaced my anti roll bar bushes and drop links and the noise was still there. I changed the right hand side wishbone, and the noise went. Change wishbones on both sides though, as soon as one is new the other will start to go. I'm now getting a knocking from my passenger side so i'll have to replace the left hand wishbone in the next few weeks.

Does this happen when going uneven roads?

If it's the ball joint it will knock if you're turning on uneven ground. Turning on even ground it shouldn't do it. If you're travelling straight it shouldn't do it, unless it's really worn then it might make a knock on more severe potholes.

Are you talking about the lower arm ball joint?

Yes, the lower arm ball joint. The one riveted to the wishbone. If you take your wheel off and jack it somewhere not on the wishbone, you should be able to wiggle the strut against the wishbone and it should have a bit of play. One thing to look for is if it looks the like rubber sleeve has collapsed.

Mmmn, I don't think I have the same problem, after I gave the thing a good service yesterday I took it out for a run over a variety of roads/lanes. I can replicate the noise on in a straight line at exactly 1900-2000rpm when accelerating away.
However it's worse if I'm turning right.
I did have an old diesel Passat once, that had a broken up cat that had a similar noise.
But I've give the thing a damn good thumping from underneath and it seems sound!
Think Ill have to just let it get worse until I can pin it down.

or Phillis now I have a Gaylander!

Does this look collapse?
