I've finally got the old bugger running at a close to normal pace :)

But.......

It seems to have developed a fairly loud tick/tap/rough sounding noise between 2500rpm and 3500rpm under acceleration
Strange thing is....

  • It's fine when cold and only starts happening when the engine begins to warm up.
  • It only happens under acceleration at those revs ( I can sit constant at those revs and it will stop but as soon as I put my foot down it kicks in again)
  • It speeds up with the revs
It's not running any hotter than normal (compared to a friends), it is smoking a bit I've noticed and apart from that it runs sweet. It has been suggested that it could be down to a desperate need for an oil change but I aren't too sure on that one.

Any ideas, help very much appreciated.

I haven't had it very long really, about 2 months I think so haven't got around to valve check.

Will try replacing the vacuum pump and hope for the best.

VALVE CLEARANCES.

1. rotate crankshaft by means of crankshaft pully bolt in a clock wise direction untill number 8 valve (counting from front of engine) is fully open.

2.using feeler gauges and a screw driver, adjust clearence of number one valve.
valve clearences - all valves = 0.20mm

3.tighten tappet adjusting screw locknut when clearance is correct.

4.adjust remaining valve clearances on the following sequence.

adjust number 3 clearence with number 6 valve fully open
adjust number 5 clearence with number 4 valve fully open
adjust number 2 clearence with number 7 valve fully open
adjust number 8 clearence with number 1 valve fully open
adjust number 6 clearence with number 3 valve fully open
adjust number 4 clearence with number 5 valve fully open
adjust number 7 clearence with number 2 valve fully open

5. upon compleation, recheck all clearances and adjust as necessary.

taken from the LAND ROVER 300Tdi Diesel Engine OVERHAUL MANUAL.

Check yer valve clearances first!
A new vacuum pump is about 60 quid, so yer need to be sure that's what it is!

Before all that ... do an oil and filters change.

;)

A quick google search only brings up a 'brake vacuum pump'. Is that what people are suggesting?

I will go down the oil change route first anyhow, t'was actually on my to do list for this weekend so we shall see if it solves it quite soon.

thats the one, its on the side of the engine and has a pipe to the brake servo.

Just as an extra question, if this was failing and ticking along with the symptoms I've listed, would this appear to prevent the revs from going further than say 3500rpm?

errr ? nope, but i think the engine is about maxed out or on its limits at 3500 revs. keep giving it that much and your asking for a new engine. about 3000 revs should get you to about 75 to 80mph.

Hmmmm..... ok that's a new thing learned lol. They go further than that surely!??

Can't break past the 70mph barrier yet unless going downhill, still things to do I suppose.

Doubt it somehow. I'd suggest changing the oil first (and second maybe) and take it from there. And check out this thread about oils, could save you a fortune! Wish I'd seen it a few weeks ago!

cough cough ........ valve clearances

Seeing a theme here? Incorrect valve clearances will have an affect on your performace as it will not allow your engine to breathe efficiently. The most important factor of a smooth, economic engine is its ability to breathe.

humans can suffer this problem to, you need to breath to operate economically.

for top speed issue try wheel bearings, my 200tdi struggled to make 65mph, changed wheel bearings and now will sail right up to 90 at about 3200 rpm maybe 100 downhill, its a bit scarey at that speed tho only do it if im in a real hurry
