I currently have a 90 TD CSW, which is all very well, but not enough seems to need fiddling with on it.

What I really want to do is get a series 2/2a/3 and plonk a 2.5 diesel in it and spend my time restoring it to originality (bar engine obviously).

The charm of a nice looking, nicely running "old" land rover is really what I want, but there seems to be bugger all about.

Any tips on how much to spend and where they're all hiding?

Edit takes forever so I'll just add...

Also would like advice on which series would be best.
SWB pickup that is...
Obviously pickup isn't a necessity as can be changed, but 88" is...

And that I figure a budget of under 2 grand for vehicle and engine wouldn't be too bad...

Sounds promising.

I take it that would be a runner as well?

The only problem I foresee is insuring one, especially only being 17 atm, but limited mileage and adding a parent as named driver might do something about that...

I'm only named on the 90. Whereas I want to be policy holder on the series...

I assume it'll still be quite high, or will restricting mileage to 3k miles pa be a good idea, coz it will only get used every other weekend or so...?

ive got a swb 88 soft top pick up with a 200tdi discovery engine and a new 90front end. i pay £97 a year for my insurance and i'm 21
2k buy cheap 1 like i did and spend the money on preping it to ur standard of taste alot more fun
i paid £8oo for mine she was red she is now back to nato green she had a 3.5 v8 in when i 1st got her bought obviously to heavy on fuel

Yeah.

And I've got a mate with an n/a or a TD just stood in his drive next to his forever drive-bound 109 which might be obtained for mere pennies...

I am no expert, but unless prices have rocketed, should easily get a Series landie on your budget. Paid £500 for my (not any more) rust bucket. Get a tax exempt one...save you a few bob :)

p.s the spares for the Series 2/2A are just as available and cheap as the Series 3.

How original do you want to go?

prices have gone up a bit all the guides say minimum £1k for a road worthy exhample, where as a couple of months ago it was £700

i prefer the s3 bodywork as you can have door mirrors( cant fit them to 2and 2a as the hinges are diferent unless you want defender door hinges which will look wrong on a 2

here is me cannot sell my ser 111 swb and here is some one else who cant get 1 send me your email and i will send pics, and a list of work done and left to do it as been re chassied on back half, every moving item as been removed cleaned polish repaired or replaced painted and put back then painted again,

How original do you want to go?

Sensibly original. As original looking on outside as poss and preferably not that many alterations inside.

FWHs and parabolics might be as far as I'd go structurally externally.

As for door mirrors, real wing mirrors are better imo, no taking eyes off road ahead...

Meh, forwards all the way then.

Chances are I'll be slow enough to not have to worry about things being behind me...

Or broken down at side of road...

Yeah, I'd seen that, thanks.

There's a number. But they're all so far away without a trailer...

Or a car atm, 90s ****ing oil from cooler gasket and I need that to get fixing asap

Well, I don't think it looks that odd on my 2A..but if you are going for originality I guess it's not the way to go

Good, that means no obsessing about having original Land Rover nuts bolts and washers then :)
