Advise needed... I can remove my starting key while the motor is running on my 1980 series 3 Diesel... Is this like this with all Series 3 diesels? Because the Belgian MOT says they can't allow that... thank you for your help

Do you mean you can turn the ign off and the engine keeps running then you can remove the key?
I assume the car is pull cable to stop?

Surely a Series 3 doesn't have a pull to stop cable?
Guess it might.
I just presumed it should stop with the ignition key, so I could be wrong (again)

My series 3 does and I am pretty sure so did the early 83 One Ten models that still had the 2.25 engine
Recon solenoid stop came with the 2.5 engine that came with the Ninety introduction in 84.

I would say it's unbelievable but then again it's Land Rover we are talking about.

Thank you, Anaconda. I'll take a closer look at it.

Many greetings,
Dirk
Don't thank me as it seems I am most likely incorrect.
To clarify you have a cable to pull to stop the engine and a separate ignition switch?
If that's the case then that's how they are from factory.
Maybe an interior photo might be useful.
Apart from that your Land Rover looks very smart.

With my 77 Series 3. You normally pull the stop out first to stop the motor, you have to hold it out until the motor stops running and then let go the stop and it returns to the run position ready for next time.
If you switch off the ignition key first most electric items stop but engine keeps going. [ key can be removed] But now when the stop is pulled it stays out in the off position and will only spring back to the run position when key is turned to on position. Nut's but that's the way it has always been. Its a Land Rover! :D

Indeed Lynall, the car is a pull cable stop and I can remove the ignition key while the car is running. The MOT guys don't accept that, especially with the wheel lock...

But it is working as intended and as designed from the factory. If it is a legal design of vehicle in your country, then surely there must be a way to object or protest the MoT.

Hello Anaconda and Tottot,

Lile I said, I looked into it today... I took out the start and stop combination and went to a Land Rover wizard with it. He opened it up and then we saw that the system that makes it impossible to pull the key out while the motor is running was worn out. He welded the worn off 'things' back up and now it's funtioning as it should. Like Tottot explained, you should only be able to turn the key to the lock position if the stop knob is fully out, hence the motor is out... and it is only possible to push the stop knob back in with the key in the preheating position... It is a fine piece of mechanical engineering. In the photo you see the 2 'things' that stick out a bit and are welded up. The metal sheath(?) Of the stop knob pushes these down. With the stop knob fully out, they go up and make that the ignition key can be turned to the lock or off position.
So yes, Anaconda thank you for your remark :) without it I would not have taken action.

Thanks to all for your input. I'm waiting for a new stop cable to arrive (the old one was on the point of breaking due to shafing) and then I can go back to the Belgian MoT guys
