200tdi belt or 200tdi direct drive

Hi.
What engine would be better for long term, as I'm looking at a direct driven cog 200tdi. I'm wondering I can put a belt driven 200tdi in if the original engine stopped working would it be a straight swap or would the gearbox need replaced too?
Plus what engine would be better?

Errr, If you mean a 200 fitted with a set of Zuse timing gears well then it is swings and roundabouts. They were an expensive after market fit and therfore not that common. Some liked them, some did not.
The simplest fit of 200tdi I recon would be one from a defender, the high turbo position makes exhaust exit simpler. But what are you wanting it for? Series in avatar but posted in Defender section?

I'm currently driving a series but I'm looking for a defender to drive and tow with.

The early coil sprung Land Rovers are not Defenders, they are Land rover One ten and Ninety vehicles.[can make a difference when looking for parts]
The land Rover name then became the company name so the vehicle had to have its own name so Defender name arrived in 1990 with the 200tdi engine.
Previous models had the same engine as the series 3 then NA 2.5 and then the 2.5 turbo. To fit a 200tdi into these is pretty straight forward.

I'm looking at buying a defender 110 3 door from 1993 with a 200tdi direct drive timing and it's paired up with the LT77 5 speed gearbox. I'm just wondering if the direct drive is better or worse than the belt engines

That is standard for 93 110 as regards engine. The term "direct drive" I have not come across regards the Land Rover engine. Can only think it is with regards Zuse gears as noted in above post. Have a look at "Landrover forum uk" for more info about them.
