Hi all,
I've been offered this 1989 V8 County 110 Safari by the widow of an old friend who died a while ago. I quite fancy a County but this one's a bit tired and scruffy as you can see from the picture. The shabby bodywork with rusty bits lets it down. Interior's not too bad and it appears to have only done 74k miles. It drives fine, however and appears to have been reasonably well maintained. I've seen this up for all sorts of fancy prices and just wonder if they're grounded in any reality. Can anyone here chip in with a guestimate as to how much I should offer? I don't want to 'nick' it as the owner and his missus were good friends, so just a fair price all round?
Cheers,
LL

Why is it on black plates?

When it comes to value of older landy's a lot depends on the condition of the chassis and bulkhead, at least it does to those who know them. I presume IOM has MOT's ? Can history be checked?

The chassis itself is fine as it was replaced about 2 years ago. Bulkhead's been repaired. It's been through the IOM equivalent of an MOT and is road legal currently. Engine's sweet; gearbox is fine. A couple of swinging arms could do with replacing, though (corrosion).

if you don’t buy it I’m sure @dag019 after another 110.
He also may know prices as he has been looking for a bit

I reckon that would clean up pretty well, looks pretty original.
No idea about price, personally they all seem too expensive to me.
Yes, all the panels are original as is what's left of the paintwork which has gone very matte over the years. Some folks value originality and bang on about 'patina' but I certainly don't. If I bought it, I'd have to get it repainted and reliveried at least.

Minimum 8k. Possibly more if the new chassis is galvanised.

£3,500 is the average of the guestimates so far: £1000, £1500 and £8000. £3,500 seems a bit on the low side?
I would agree with the 8k maybe a bit more depending on condition of other things.

Although I am not looking for a V8 so these prices will be lower I paid £2250 18months ago for an ‘89 110 station wagon with no v5 (exported but never left) and very little chassis and bulkhead left. I am currently looking for another one as a project and am expecting to pay 2-2.5k again for one that needs a new chassis and bulkhead.

Anything that has had a new chassis I would suggest puts the price at 5k minimum. Unfinished projects with new chassis seems to be between 5-8k so a complete (and I assume running) vehicle should start at the top of that and potentially be worth more.
You say it has had a new chassis and the bulkhead repaired. What else is wrong with it other than the paintwork being a little faded? (I agree with the above that would polish back up nicely and not need repainting).

If it’s fully running, good mechanical order, all original, low mileage V8, with all the steelwork in good condition, and an interior in reasonable condition (complete and similar to body work), then I would not be surprised if it was in the 12-15k category on the open mainland market. Currently originality is worth the big money. And V8’s have always demanded a higher price.

A galvanised chassis and originality will make this desirable. £8k sounds achievable. A new set of galvanised body cappings and a polish up of the bodywork would work wonders.

True that originality seems to be valued more highly than a fresh re-paint even if it's a pro job. But does the paint they used for these back in '89 lend itself to being polished (by which I mean T-Cut or similar abrasive cutting polish)?

Well maybe you're right, then. I should forget about a respray and just get it jet-washed, T-cut and waxed for 500 quid or whatever they charge these days. The interior is actually quite good, just rather grubby but that too would certainly clean up.
