If you lift the lock, does it feel 'loose' or notchy?

What year is it?

Yes, this can happen for various reasons. On the driver's side I had this problem - the door latch wouldn't work, or if it did, it would stick in the shut position. The culprit turned out to be not the latch itself but the plastic housing that the lock button goes in which had broken. On another occasion I had the problem that the passenger door mechanism would jam in the locked position. Generally after driving around for a little while it would start working again. However, it did so on an MOT test, which was failed because they couldn't get the door open. There did not appear to be anything wrong so with the door trim panel off I lubricated everything and put it back together. Then a few weeks later it happened again and took ages to unjam itself, whreupon I bought a new latch mechanism and put it in. It's been fine since. Nothing obviously wrong - probably just a bit too worn.

Thank you seems right now all we have to do is get the door card off to take it to the garage. The car is old and we should expect these things to happen but not when they choose the worst time. Thank you.

Getting door card off while shut is nigh impossible with out serious damage to it.
Neither inner or outer handle will release I guess?
Try holding up the lock button while working handle's. I button does not want to come up release it again.
Now have a feel of the button on the door handle and if it feels loose with no pressure when pushed likely the bit on the inside is stuck. Try just slapping the door below the handle with your hand, may make it let go.
It is possible to get some spray lube/releaser in there by prying up the outer window seal glass up.
Couple of good videos on the you tube that help show how the system works.

The door trim is held in place by push-in clips so you can't get the whole thing off with the door shut, but it is possible to release the top and spray stuff in in the general direction of the latch mechanism which may help.

As per @tottot's observations above, a bit of vibration can help. I think that's why mine started working again after I'd driven around for a while.

Another thing I've done with stubborn doors is to unscrew the hinges first, and after waggling them around they can be unhooked from the striker at the latch end. Obviously, support the weight of the door carefully, because if you let it hang just on the latch you'll probably bend something. This method is not suitable for models with electric windows or central locking because there are wires between the A pillar and the door. But for old fashioned wind up windows and push button locks it can be an option.
