I did worry about this. so checked into it.
Nowadays, they don't make a killing but I think that back in the 80s they must have made more.
Speaking as one who got his fingers burnt in the "low cost endowment " farce.
I got caught up in the "endowment farce" all the time I had the mortgage I ignored the red letter's warning me to pay in more (in failing endowment, good idea!) and in the end it paid out exactly as it was predicted originally. Must have been a rare case.

You were lucky. 😲 😲 😲 😲
I/we had 4 of the sods.
3 taken out with my ex, one for each time we bought a house, then the last one when we divorced and I bought her out.
The first two did as they were advertised, came in at more than the basic insurance value, the third came in slightly lower and the 4th came in well below. If we hadn't been going to sell the house we would have had to have done summat drastic. Like you we got the notices but had a plan anyway. We sold it to finance buying in France.

I took it up with the ombudsman as it was the same advisor all the time.
They said that his selling of the policies to me was OK because "at the time" they were performing as predicted.
Which of course is BS when it comes to 25 odd years down the line.

To me they are incredibly complicated and something I think might be a good idea may cost me badly.
Until I paid the mortgage off I couldn't really pay in enough but now I have some money spare I have found I can't pay in more. Something to do with the original company being bought out.
Who would have thought being in your 50s is emotionally harder than being a teenager!
Off subject, sorry,if you find a Time Machine let me know cos I’m effin off back to the 80’s…could list the reasons but ain’t got all day. I’m sorting out pension stuff just now too. Nightmare. ✌🏻

On some happier news I have found a registered company who charge only if you take their advice. So essentially they will look into my pensions for free and if they come up with a plan that involves moving a pension then it's a % of the value. Most likely a set up fee if I start a 3rd pension instead.
Anyway I'm happy with that for now, what the report comes up with I will have to wait and see.
