Historic 90...or not.

So tomorrow, Friday, she is 40 years old. Got excited and pulled my log book out in prep to take to the post office and register it as historic. Turns out Next april is when it becomes Tax free! Doh.
It does say that it's MOT free now, but firstly, that don't bother me as I always MOT my classics, it keeps me on my toes and my MOT guy knows what he's doing. (pic below at last mot).
So, I'm left wondering if I can still register it as historic but still pay another year of tax? Anyone else just done this?

Seems you cannot register is as historic either. Historic registering and tax free are both linked. So I wait another year before it's officialy recognised as 40, even though it'll be 41. It does not officially need an MOT from now on though.

The guidance on the .gov site is very clear. You'd be better off reading it than spending the time to post a thread in the hope someone will go and read it for you.

Already read it, it states the tax will be free from next April 26, but mot free now. But can I register it as historic now or not. That is not so clear.

Been desperately trying to keep it original as I replace bits and get her tip top ready for some major trips. Endless list of jobs to do though.

Looks really nice that. I’ve never been a fan of the decals though, but as that’s the factory look I can see why you keep them. I thought your question was a valid one by the way…..just not one I can answer

Yeah, I think I'm going to go to the post office tomorrow and send it off anyway as officially it's 40, see what happens. Just have to pay another tax year and ULEX (inaudible grumbles)

I think what he’s saying though, I might be wrong, is if it’s not registered before Jan 85 it’s not 40yr old yet. I think you said it’s not until tomorrow, so assume it was registered in April 40 years ago, not January. Making assumptions again as I’ve never been in this position, this time next year will the Gov website say built before January 86 ??

It is odd, at the end of the day it does not matter that much, but I will send it off as it literally says when vehicle is 40. Aside from that it explains the tax thing. I'm doing a few historic runs this year and next, I assume I could register it as historic. I'll find out.

OK, it seems that you cannot register a vehicle as historic until the April after the Jan it is 40, which is a shame, as it won't be in the historic class this year. As the gov site says, it's tax free then. (already knew that)
So next April I will need a v112 form filled in, then the post office can send it off. Seems it does not need an MOT from today onwards, but as I said, I tend to MOT my classics anyway.

Maybe I'll speak to the club and explain it's officially a classic anyway, just that the gov only think about how they can get tax from everyone.

PS: according to gaydon, manufacturing date was 16th March. Was kinda hoping it may have been before jan 1st.

You may find that although they make you pay road tax for another year your vehicle is ULEZ exempt if it is registered as "Historic" class.

I'm bemused (confused??) on how you are not understanding this. The screenshot I supplied clearly shows the section is 'Historic' and the first sentence which I highlighted says it needs to be built before 1 Jan 1985.....

If yours was built before then = YES for historic, if it was built after, then = NO for historic. I have no idea how they could make it clearer...

All of this is clearly on the .gov site. The MoT and Road Tax use different dates and systems. I suspect Road Tax is because it runs to a Tax Year April thru March. But they want the vehicle to be 40 years for the entire calendar year.

I was seeing if the historic part was different to the tax part. It's clear that the tax needs another year but I wanted to know if I can register it as historic for other reasons. That part was not clear.
It is clear to me now that the historic vehicle wording has nothing to do with a car being 40, it's all about tax. Club has told me to show the gaydon document I have, so it's academic now. Please don't stress about it, I was seeking clarity from anyone who has done it.
