im not fussed whether is injected or carbs as long as it provides propulsion is good with me, the thing that l like with the range rover engine and box is the viscous transferbox, im keen to see how much better its going to be , its not really comparing apples with apples since my present truck is on 2wd and even that is compromised by the very very stiff suspension thats presumably like it due to the fact its a 6 tonner, i exaggerate not if i drive over a lolly pop stick it stops me since it lifts the opposing wheel and on a normal rearwheel drive diff that stops you as the wheel in the air just spins, so even in a gravel carpark its was really awkward to reverse the camper into position as i would just keep spinning wheels, having 4 wheeldrive and a viscous transfer and axle difflocks and 6 wheels should put me in a different league (hopefully), some of the air suspension on the rr might find its way over onto the iveco as well so l can level out the suspension to keep the grip/pressure on the axles more evenly matched
so the permanent 4 wd is a plus point for the P38 against the chevy V8 being part time like a series lr but its bigger capacity should produce more torque to get the whole thing rolling easier, for now i will try and get the P3 engine and box out and running in a frame standalone and see where we go

The 350 will mate to the RR box ;), just thought I would throw that in your pot of thinkings:).

please do enlighten me, who makes an adapter plate ? i will consider all things till its bolted in the iveco
thanks Andy

They aren't cheap new. But they are about. If you want to search, but not many in the UK I think.
But they used to be put in with the hp22 (non electronic box) now how many wires did that get rid of?

I have a 630r which is a 383(350stroked) to an hp24 with a different ecu for engine which talks to the box and everything else.
But that’s all outside the sound of your budget, I would just ignore me and go with your original plan :) .

The transfer box is morse chain driven the viscous part is like a diff lock for the axles and you have to gun it to get it to work.

right a bit of background into why im fiddling with this P38 engine, i have a camper a big 5th wheel Canadian one which ironically i got from the everglades seeing as its a winterpack one but hey ho thats irrelevant what is relevant is its weight its close to 5 tons with the tanks empty  thats puts it outside the towing capacity of most if not all uk pickups like the hilux, navara etc
so i had to use an iveco 59-12 which has a train weight of 10,000kg and as it only weighs 2.5 tons ive got 7.5tons capacity left to tow with, the 59 is 5.9 tons max vehicle wieght and the 12 is a very optimistic 120 bhp, in your dreams or ive got a very poor engine which i dont think i have as its flys along when not towing.

right so thats the camper and the iveco i presently use but its god dam awful to tow with its so slow its dangerous, modern cars are to quick you go to pull out at an island it looks clear and wham the cars arrive before im out, its like being an old time trucker you look in the mirror and you have a convoy behind you so bad i havent taken it out for a while, so last year i stumbled on another iveco tractor unit same as the one above but the engine was missing and the cab was damaged but its saving grace was it was the 4 wheel drive version, axle difflocks as standard and twin rear wheels all sound good to me, with the cab off its just 2 straight chassis rails front to back same as any lorry, gearbox is still in it but the 3lt turbo diesel engine had been sold as it was worth money, now the gearbox is a ford item and on the back is an integral transfer box that drops passengerside, the interesting part is the transfer box is NP208 which would you believe is also fitted to many american motors including the 350 chevy with the th 350/400 autobox so there is a route to bolt the transferbox straight on to my chevy box and i wont have to alter my prop shafts etc, now a rover or chevy is not going to fit under the cab/bonnet of an iveco daily but as it was damaged its gone in the bin anyway and i ve bough a model AA ford fiberglass body which has a longer bonnet to hide the engine under, like this but with a 5th wheel coupling on the back instead of a body

so its torque im after to get it all rolling which is why maybe the 5.7lt chevy might be better than the 4.6 rover, undecided on that one , so there you go you know as much as me now ..........................

Sounds interesting. I'd go for the Chevy engine.

@zed on here has some threads where he did some interesting transplants and played with getting the gearbox working correctly. Might be worth checking his old threads.

Surely a big ass diesel with lots of torque would be the way to go.
i dont mind a big ass diesel but this P38 fell into my hands cheap and its in my workshop now, its not like its a daily driver so fuel consumption is not that much of a consideration. and im assuming the 4.6 through a auto box will have lots of torque to get things rolling and theres always low box if im starting on a hill, so im going to perceive and lift the engine and box out get it running on a stand and see where we go, if i decide that another option is a better fit i can always use this engine and box for another project i seem to have enough lol

it may well come to that , ive just sent off to the states for a rear housing for the autobox so the NP 208 will bolt straight up to it, it has its plus points its still in a 4 ton winibego parked in the yard the body is as rotten as a rotten thing why they make campers/caravans out of balsa wood is beyond me, its bound to rot away, its done 27k miles and has been run on LPG from new so i guess its going to be like a new pin inside
will look at zeds threads thank you

one thing i noticed while poking around the P38 yesterday is that its sitting on coil springs was that an option or is this the work of a previous owner ? shame really i was looking forward to fiddling with or repurposing the air bags lol

and how much of a market is there for selling some of the bits i dont want on, the cream leather interior is in remarkable condition as is the wood on the dash board

Lots of bits have resale value.

BECM +keys +instrument cluster + lockset as a matching set.
Door looks .
All the unwanted ECUs,
Complete interiors
Axles and diffs (4.6 had 4 pin some even front and back I believe) they are stronger.
Loads of other good bits if good condition. Even some of the body panels.
It will all sell. the list of salvagable bits is endless to the point you are left with a shell even then I have see rear arch panel cut out to be reused.

Its really a matter of if you want it hanging around. or just sell it to somebody who has a P38 and wants 1 for spares. Many of us do

not much i just looked on ebay lol, i might weld up some frames for the seats and have them in the workshop

i better buy some racking and start stacking the stuff on for resale then lol

I was thinking about doing that to my front seats too for the BBQ area with a little 12v battery so they could still be adjusted :) .

what sends the messages to the dash like bonnet open etc is that the bcem as l was thinking of using the instrument brinicle in the iveco so all the gauges work
