300 tdi transplant do or dont???

ive been offerd a l reg 3dr 300 tdi discovery for £800 it is in superb nick and 12 months mot i was gonna buy it and transplant the engine etc into my 2.5 td 90.question is is it worth it or should i sell it on?,,it really is to nice to break but is the 300 tdi engine and bits any good in the 90 and what other stuff will i need..thanks

why not just drive the disco ?

you'd probably get £1400 for it if it's got an MOT at least

expensive to buy just for the engine

dont like discos they too long for offroading and i love my defender 90,its a different animal altogether the disco is too much like a family motor and my mates disco struggles offroad against my 90,but maybe i could make some dosh on the disco?..or do i do the engine route and then scrap the disco as scrap is getting good prices at the mo

As Sean has already said ................ flippin expensive way to get an engine for the 90

Keep the Disco or sell it mate ............. with the funds from selling it you could get a 200 or 300TDI lump for the 90 and have lots of change for bolt on goodies/beer

so what is the difference between the 200 and 300 tdi?..everyone i speak to seems to favour the 200

They are very similar but the 300 had to have a load of amendments to meet euro emmissions legislation, so it's all things that aim to make it a bit more "clean" and not really a pile on performance (although those who drive them say they are a bit smoother). There are more gadgets on the 300, so it's already starting to lose the 200's simplicity.

true.the disco really is a nice motor 7 seater .all terrain tyres.new head gasket,new radiator,ne water pump,12 months mot,its just not for me but i might buy it and flog it on,the guy just wants the room hence silly price

got to agree , although it would be a good conversion i don't see the point of scrappin a perfectly good disco .

ok..i think i will keep my 2.5 td engine at the mo as its runnin fine and i have no probs with it.will probably replace with the 200 tdi if and when the engine packs in

the back end bottoms out really easy as its too long,you try taking them up a steep incline and listen to the back end scrape as it approaches the upward hill,the diffs also make a nice groove in the mud

How can the diffs be lower on a disco than on a 90? Discos are very capable off road espescially when given the benefit of some proper tyres. IMO a tdi powered disco would be superior to a 19j powered 90 or 110 in just about any situation, and yes I have owned both.

i agree with the back end, but thats mainly down to the towbar, as for the diff scraping, why do folk fit disco axles on 90's?

the disco is great on road and off road is pretty good aswell but its nowhere near as agile as my defender 90 and i can asure you the diffs on my mates are certainly lower in the mud than my 90,i know ive towed him out of the sticky mud stuff a few times,i cant see the point of all that power offroad when your in the mud in low range doing 5 miles an hour.but yes on road the 90 is probably around 60-70 mph downhill with the wind behind you and a disco is 80mph plus
