Hi all. I have got a quite noticeable whine coming from what i think is the gearbox of my 2011 4.4TDV. it’s done just over 100,000 miles and i have heard rumours on here of horror stories on L322 at around 80,000m. Am I about to enter a world of expensive pain?

The 80K horror stories relate to the earlier diesel with the GM box.
Even so you may well be about to enter a world of pain. Whining is IMO more likely to come from Diffs or transfer box than the auto box or occasionally the wife:cool:
First step is to check all the oil levels.

If its a diff ,they usually makes more noise or less noise on overrun ,ie off throttle ,wheel bearings make a different sound when cornering left or right sometimes:rolleyes: ,gearbox same whine at same speed  pitch changes with different speeds ,,,,as for the transfer ,try selecting low range then back to higho_O never know might get better or worse .....;)

Thanks Keith, The wife is now whining because she is driving it and can hear it. Also commented that she thinks it has slipped a gear or struggled to change occasionally. The front diff has been changed, due to wading on salisbury plain and then not servicing the diff afterwards - you live and learn - but the rear diff’ is original.
Oil has been changed in the transmission system in the last 2 years, 20,000 miles as i also had to replace the oil pump not long ago.

Sorry, had a couple of pints. No relationship between changing the diff’ and the oil pump! What am i like?
