Not a great start!

This is not my first defender but I decided to take the leap and go for a TD5 (the others have been 200 and 300 tdi).

Going well today on a trip to the coast. Doing 60 in 5th gear up a long hill on the motorway when suddenly the temp shoots right up and off the scale!

Pull over to fine the underside of the bonnet and top of the drivers side wing covered in oily water and a large v shaped split in the hose coming from the water tank.

The cap of the water tank had a small amount of mayo on it which im guessing is going to be bad news for me. No mayo on the top of the oil cap though.

It has done 133500 miles and has been serviced regularly. I have only had it a few days and this is just on of the problems!

Any advice please chaps..

If yer got it off a dealer take it back and get the fecker to fix it. If yer bought it private it's too bad you'll have to sort it yerself. If it's just a hase no prob but if there's pressure in the cooling system that's caused it could be head gasket

The hose bursting and a sudden loss of water I would imagine is the reason the temp guage went up so quickly. If you stopped right away then no damage will be done.

Whether or not the head gasket has caused this is something you will have to check out. Get it filled up and run it to temp without antifreeze at the minute, and check it out. Look for any leaks that could have caused this issue, a loss of water would have led to a build up of pressure culminating in the hose blowing. Make sure it's not a big hole in your radiator, water pump gone, etc, before you go off on the head gasket route

Oil in the cooling system is not always a good sign, however I have seen slight traces of oil before with no adverse effects on other vehicles, and of course it might have been residue from a previous problem.

Any signs that it's been torn apart at any previous time??

If they do, and the hose split, its either a damaged hos, or the pressure bas built up very quickly, like a head gasket failure.

One of my engines had signs a lot like this, only with less oil and water mixture, extreme pressure in the coolant system, stupid temperatures, drinking lots of water (although the hose didn' split on mine), so I took off the head and there was a crack all the way down one of the bores. :-(


Hopefully this won't be the cause of the problem for you, I think my engine had been left to sit and froze. I can't imagine a head gasket being that hard to replace on a TD5, assuming you don't have a warranty for it?

It's an ebay special I'm afraid

We stopped straight away and let it cool down. Then I wrapped the split pipe up with some insulation tape and limped to the services (5 miles). Temp only went above normal when I slowed down.

Refilled with water at the services and turned around to come home. No probs on the way back. Temp was normal.

So I guess the first thing to do is change the pipe, fill it back up and get it hot again. Then check the pipes for pressure?

They do have a pressure release but unfortunatly once the water gets too low circulation stops and the engine boils the water in the engine, and the steam produced is too much, too quick for it to cope, so something else goes, hose, cap blown off or split the header tank etc.

Once he gets it filled up he will have a better idea.

Keep fingers crossed it's not the head.

Not from the look of it. Its a 1 owner 110, 2000 reg used for a landscape gardener.

I will replace the hose tomorrow and fill her up. Is it worth me laking off the header tank and giving it a clean or get a new one?

Just give it a clean out, it will be fine.

I hope that there was antifreeze in it, and the water is not all rusty and orrible.

From the look of what spewed out over the engine and wing tops I would say it was clear!

I will give this a bash tomorrow and see what happens.

You will be able to tell by looking in yeer header tank, the **** sticks to the side, all brown and orible.

Be positive it's just gona be a leak somewhere, remember to check around the water pump area.
