Stand infront of the bumper & find the bolts going through the chassis. Now below them you will hopefully find some jacking points(things with holes in. This is where a chassis number should be.
Is the chassis galvanised ?

That's a Defender chassis.

It's really simple. That's a Defender with a Series logbook. Your mate lied.

agreed. That’s a defender that’s had its original Id obliterated and a whole wrong ID attached to it to avoid tax, or possibly cover up a stolen vehicle.

IIRC, in the UK , drivers side of the block toward the front on a flat horizontal surface , if you look at the fuel pump and turn your gaze towards the block you should see it. Normally covered in gunk.

But unless you dig through the gunk how do you know, sometimes you get lucky and its just gunk.....

Now if the under dinitrol Chassis number and under gunk engine number do not match any of the V5 numbers, technically you are screwed.

I would say remove the steering guard or at least lower it enough to gain eccess to full side of chassis then see what is there, maybe buy a cheap boroscope and see if there is any evdience of welding in that area inside the chassis itself.
