I fort you 'ad to 'ave an airbrick in there. But then, what do I know ……. nowt!

I fort you 'ad to 'ave an airbrick in there.
It was a flush (with the floor) fire grate, with a draught pipe from under the floor area. I have kept that in place and it ventilates the chimney space, so didn't need to put an air brick in the wall. Also capped off the top of the chimney so damp shouldn't get in anyway.

Yer chimley needs an air flow ter allowd new air int chimney un ter flow oat. This will stop condensation un damp bild up. If yer does put an air brick int then does it er few feet oft grand so yer dunt get creepy crawleys int.

Eye need ter do same ter my chimley. Eye assa flowa pot sorcer ont top eld ont wiv lectric caybul ter stop rayn gerrin int. Eye will solve this wiv an air brick free foot oft grand un nok top ov chimley oft roof un it be open top int loft.

I thought so too but seems you can seal them off at the bottom so long as it can still breathe at the top. I'd rather maintain some airflow even if it means some heat escapes

Might pay to fit one of those twirly type chimbly caps, keeps tweeters out and on windy days draws air around to help move humidity build up ...

Can't you take it down all the way and free up some room space ?
