New to the group and need help

Hi All

I'm going round in circles and getting no where

I've got a Freelander 1 on an 02 plate and the steering column has an intermittent fault. It locks and won't release and subsequently car won't start. Had the AA out last time and they said replace it but after an internet search it seems the new part is something in between £500 and £900!

The car is a 2ltr TD4 diesel with just over 100k any help will be much appreciated.

If the steering lock won't release, trying turning the steering wheel a bit if there's a pressure on it. Or ask for help in the Freelander technical section below.
