Just a quick message to say many thanks to you all for all your help (you know who you are) who have assisted me on my p38 diesel. This was all new to me and learnt so much about engines and still got alot to learn. I will still need help along the way but feel I can assist a small bit if anyone else is planning doing something this big for the first time and not lose your nerve think we all been there. Many thanks again.

As I said, I admire your persistence, so pleased you have got there in the end.:D
 
Nothing wrong with the M51 if you look after it. Like anything mechanical if not maintained it will fail.
It's rough, the chains don't last, begger all bottom end torque, leak off pipes that constantly fail etc etc. My Transit engine is smoother, has much more low end grunt, despite nearly 170K the FIP does not need retiming nor have the leak off pipes ever needed replacing. Th Pajero engine was also much better.

Proper leak off pipes last, cheap chinese crap doesn't. You can hardly blame the engine for crap leak off pipes, blame the crap they put in modern fuel for that. The only time low end torque effects driving is if you have a manual gearbox.

So BMW fitted crap leak off pipes from new did they? The fact that the auto masks the low end grunt does not excuse the fact that i's not there. It's quite an achievement to produce a diesel with no low end torque, but that's German engineering for you.
 
Don't forget the M51 in bmw cars was around 150bhp and served a lot of models sub 2 tons very well, it was tuned down for Lr and Opel and then everyone paid to tune them back up to something like. 50mpg on a manual box in 5 series bmw mid nineties wasn't bad, torque or no torque. ;)

No they didn't as with petrol engines all rubber components suffer from the additives now put in fuel. When unleaded petrol was introduced fuel tubing on older cars had to be changed or it rotted out. Same with diesels. Back in the day it was rare to have to change spill pipes. It obviously was done but nothing like as often as now. Plus the cheap crap from China also plays a part. The M51 is an almost square engine. Square engines are not know for high torque but are built to rev more freely. German engineering is very good certainly on a par with ours.

Yes, when the fuel changed my old Vauxhall started chewing through fuel line. Of course, I fixed it with what I had in the shed and it lasted about 6 months.

Done my leak-off pipes once about 5 years ago. Bosch do decent stuff. The stuff from Island-4x4 is an absolute joke. Still got it in my shed.

Funny that the Transit leak off pipes are still good after 17 years and nearly 170K miles.
My experience of German engineering is that it is pretty poor, a BMW and a Porsche from new, both unreliable dogs, a Caravan from new that turned out to be crap, a Bosch and an AEG washing machine, both short lived, even a German vacuum cleaner that fell to bits, add in my son in laws VW transporter that was off the road more often than it was on plus the VAG emissions cheating and I have a very low opinion of German stuff. They are very good at marketing to the sheeple though.
