Mine have melted.

However I seem to see a few diesel owners who use the aircon fans instead of the viscous.

Thinking out loud, would it be good enough for the V8?

Gents.

whats considered a max safe operating temp for the 3.9/4.0/4.6 V8 and at what temp would you have the elec fans come on? 'stat fully opens at 92c IIRC

The stat should be set so that the fans come on when the temperature rises above normal, so that would be 95/98 I would guess in your case. My diesels run at 95C fans come on at 98/100.
The aircon fans are only suitable as back up to the viscous on the V8 unless you fir an additional fan.

Trouble is on the diesel, by the time the overheat sensor activates the fans it's too late.

Unless there is a system leak there should be no problem. With a correctly working cap the boiling point is just over 240 F or 115 C. The overheat circuit is activated at 105 C.

Except the sensor seems to be +/- 10%, the one in my car operated nearer 115C than 105C, late enough for it to boil.

You can tune the adjustable thermostat somewhere near with a dot lazer temperature (thingywhatsitcalled) . I'd rather it came on a little sooner rather than later.
