200tdi Block Heater

Hello,

I've had a search and not really found much information (likely because not very common in UK).

I'm looking for a block heater for my 200tdi defender 90. It's a UK 90, but now i live in Sweden and is reregistered as a swedish vehicle.

In winter it can be very cold, and i expect my defender might struggle. Block heaters are fairly common here, but i am struggling finding one advertised as fitting a defender.

What i'm looking for is a block heater that you put in place of one of the core plugs. There'll then be a cable with a plug on the end I can mount somewhere around the grill, and plug a mains cable in between the plug socket on wall and plug on landy.

I've seen Mike on Britannica Restorations talk of them and show them, but i have a feeling those will be 110v instead of 220.

I would say the easiest way, is to buy a core plug for sizing purposes, then go on the hunt for the block heater.

The 200 will struggle in the proper cold, or rather you will, the engine will be fine!
If you can work it, the engine will keep its temperature, as soon as it runs light, ie town work the temp will drop, even if the stat was already open.

A 200 block heater used to be available as a genuine part from Land rover.

I hadnt even considered looking for genuine - i had always assumed it was an aftermarket. I found prc9674g which might be right, but seems long out of manufacturing

It looks like that might be for newer - it mentions 3litre diesel

There are plenty of preheating products on Fleabay, look for "HGV engine preheater". You would have to fit them into the existing cooling system, but it looks like it should be easy.

The main company in Scandinavia is DEFA, they do all types of block heaters just ordered one for my
Daughter’s Hyundai, she lives in Scotland and would like a warm vehicle to get into after a heavy frost,

Only one problem they will be 110 volts, so unless you have a building 240v to 110 v transformer

And to be fair, 110v on something outdoors in bad weather isnt such a bad thing.

You could reply it to a yellow commando and use a site 240-110v converter thing,

You could probably fit a nice Bulkhead plug somewhere near aswell

Wow, lots of replies.

Thanks - it is specifically a block heater I am looking for though - they seem to exist, the DEFA one that is advertised plums into the existing coolant system, as opposed to going into the block itself.

As i understand it 200tdi and 300tdi share the same core plugs, i THINK this - http://old.defa.com/vfp/eh/411123.pdf is for a 300tdi (says 96 onwards.....TD5 wasnt until 98, so i assume it must be 300tdi...not sure why it doesnt say 94 onwards though).

I am going to do a bit more research and then see if i can get one here in Sweden - i prefer the idea of running 220 instead of 110 with an adapter, since the plug into the car will be the same, so would be easy to accidentally connect 220 and then it go bang.
