Fitting a Low Range Switch in Dash!!

Plastic is 25 years old and will likely snap somewhere if you jamming screwdrivers on there

We're not using RRDT type of torque!

I think if you take the radio out and possibly the sides off you can access a couple of screws and if you undo those the top part can be wriggled free the tilt forward to access the tangs at the back of tge switches. Something like that.
 
Some say you can get feeler guages down the side of the switch and pull them but it didn't work for me.

You can see how the up/down switch will come out easy enough with a feeler but others are bit tricky
 
Definitely mush easier to remove the panel. Usually only takes 10 mins to do, and provides easy access to run whatever wiring you need.

Option two if you really like extra switches might be this !! :D
