Discovery question from Defender person

Hello discovery people.

Went to breakers to collect a discovery fuel filler (using it to fit a rear tank to a defender).

It's a plastic L-shaped thing with a breather pipe and bizzarely an earth lead to the plastic, but anyway. I digress.

He couldn't work out how to remove it from the disco, so got an angle grinder out and cut the fuel door off, then cut a square foot of disco side panel out complete with central fuel filler. I looked at him like he was mental, so he got the angle grinedr and cut the metal down to about an inch all round the filler cap and gave me it.

So - how do you undo the filler from the remaining bit of bodywork?

i don't want to break the brittle looking plastic so don't want to force it.

Does it unscrew? Or yank out?

Thanks

The rubber grommet round the filler neck where it enters the door aperture unscrews/prises off and the filler neck will fall away.
would you like the microcat piccy so you can see it for yerself?

Thats the very thing! Does it say anywhere that you should use almost superhuman strengh to pry it off or am I doing it wrong?

Have you tried clamping the metal part in a vice, and then twisting the filler neck I've a feeling it screws in. and the constant tightening of the filler cap has probably locked it in place.

A deeper search of the microcat database has turned this up where you can clearly see there is a locking ring behind the grommet.
